Maar die stoere taal slaat echt nergens op. Beter is dit geld te investeren in een economie, die niet afhankelijk is van autocratische regimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">In this time of growing tension about what Putin will do in the war against Ukraine, it may not be the time to criticize the tough language to massively increase European defense budgets (including in the Netherlands) (NRC 030322). But that tough language really doesn&#8217;t make sense. It is better to invest this money in an economy that is not dependent on autocratic regimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Poetin heeft de bezieling om het oude Russische Rijk van voor de Koude Oorlog van de zestiger jaren terug te krijgen. Daarbij lijkt het erop, dat hij volkomen losgezongen is van elke realiteit in zijn oorlogshandelen. Maar \u00e9\u00e9n ding weet hij wel goed te plaatsen en dat is zijn tegenstander: de NATO. Daar is de oorlog ook om begonnen. Daarom ook zijn dreigement aan het adres van de NATO om zich er niet mee te bemoeien. En de NATO gaat daar in mee. \u2018The thin red line\u2019 voor Poetin \u00e9n voor de NATO is art 5 van het NATO verdrag. Poetin weet dat het zelfmoord is om die lijn te overschrijden. Hij krijgt dan namelijk een tegenstander van formaat tegenover zich die een oorlogsbudget heeft hoger dan zijn eigen defensiebudget. En niet te vergeten een nucleaire tegenstander. Toegegeven, dat dat budget nog niet betekent, dat Europa daarmee als eenheid opereert. Maar de vredesmissies buiten Europa en het in Europees verband oefenen moeten de Europese NATO landen een bodem van gevechtservaring hebben opgeleverd. Mocht de dreiging zich voordoen aan de grenzen van de NATO, dan moet het mogelijk zijn conventionele wapens van overal in Europa te dirigeren richting het front. Daarin moet wel meer worden ge\u00efnvesteerd. Niet met meer geld, maar met meer samenwerking in Europa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Putin has the spirit to get the old Russian Empire back from before the Cold War of the 1960s. In addition, it seems that he is completely detached from any reality in his war actions. But he knows how to place one thing well and that is his opponent: NATO. That&#8217;s what started the war. Hence his threat to NATO not to interfere. And NATO agrees. &#8216;The thin red line&#8217; for Putin and for NATO is Article 5 of the NATO Treaty. Putin knows it is suicide to cross that line. He then faces an opponent of size who has a war budget higher than his own defense budget. Not to mention a nuclear adversary. Admittedly, that budget does not mean that Europe operates as a unit with it. But the peace missions outside Europe and the practice in a European context must have provided the European NATO countries with a base of combat experience. Should the threat arise on NATO&#8217;s borders, it should be possible to direct conventional weapons from anywhere in Europe to the front. More needs to be invested in this. Not with more money, but with more cooperation in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">De dreiging is n\u00fa en daar moet Europa n\u00fa het hoofd aan bieden. Stoere taal voor de toekomst past daar niet in. Het communisme en met name die van de voormalige Sovjet Unie is verslagen, omdat het systeem economisch onhoudbaar is gebleken. Dat \u2018economische beschietingen\u2019 net zo hard inslaan als kruisraketten moet Poetin overtuigen een andere weg in te slaan. Als er dan toch een hoger budget moet komen, dan is het beter dit geld te investeren in een economie, die niet afhankelijk is van autocratische regimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">The threat is now and Europe must confront it now. Tough language for the future does not fit into that. Communism and especially that of the former Soviet Union has been defeated, because the system has proved economically unsustainable. That &#8220;economic shelling&#8221; hits just as hard as cruise missiles should convince Putin to take a different path.
