Met de onverzoenlijke houding van de Indonesische schrijver Goenawan Mohamad (NRC 26\/27 maart 2022) die zich richt tegen het koloniaal bewind in het toenmalige Nederlands-Indi\u00eb bevestigt hij, dat excuses van Nederland voor dat bewind eigenlijk overbodig zijn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the irreconcilable attitude of the Indonesian writer Goenawan Mohamad (NRC 26\/27 March 2022), who focuses on colonial rule in the then Dutch East Indies, he confirms that the Netherlands’ apologies for that rule are actually superfluous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hij vindt het kwaad van het kolonialisme onvergeeflijk. Omdat kolonialisme in zijn ogen gebaseerd is op een \u2018ideologie\u2019 die werd gebruikt om te rechtvaardigen dat de Indonesi\u00ebrs (en tal van andere volkeren elders) als minder dan menselijk en als onmenselijke slaven werden behandeld. Als ik hem goed begrijp, kan daarvoor geen vergeving meer worden gevraagd, omdat de verantwoordelijken van toen niet meer leven. Dus weg met al die mooie excuses voor het slavernijverleden. Dat hij de daders van de moord op zijn vader w\u00e9l kan vergeven kan ik alleen verklaren tegen die achtergrond, namelijk dat slachtoffer en dader onderdeel waren van dat koloniaal geweld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He finds the evil of colonialism unforgivable. Because, in his view, colonialism is based on an “ideology” used to justify treating Indonesians (and many other peoples elsewhere) as less than human and inhumane slaves. If I understand him correctly, forgiveness can no longer be asked for, because those responsible are no longer alive. So get rid of all those fancy excuses for the slavery past. That he can forgive the perpetrators of his father’s murder I can only explain against this background, namely that the victim and perpetrator were part of that colonial violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bij deze onverzoenlijke houding van de heer Mohamad heb ik twee kanttekeningen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have two reservations about this irreconcilable attitude of Mr Mohamad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Hoe afzichtelijk het koloniale Nederlands-Indi\u00eb is geweest, slavernij was een algemeen aanvaard verschijnsel onder de bevolking. In zijn lezing voor de Indische Genealogische Vereniging naar aanleiding van zijn boek \u201cMoederstad. Jakarta, een familiegeschiedenis\u201d heeft Philip Dr\u00f6ge bij zijn zoektocht in de koloniale archieven in Jakarta naar zijn familiegeschiedenis tot zijn verbazing moeten constateren, dat 50% van de bewoners van het toenmalige Batavia bezit was van de andere 50%. En veelal zelfs nauwkeurig notarieel vastgelegd. Niet een door een koloniale overheid geknecht volk, maar slavernij op het niveau van bewoners onderling. Bewoners van allerlei afkomst, Hollanders (Mohamad heeft inderdaad gelijk, dat de term Nederlanders niet past), maar ook gemengdbloedigen (Indo\u2019s) en de autochtone bevolking, hadden een bezit in elkaar. Dit nuanceert de door de heer Mohamad verfoeide ‘ideologie’.<\/li>
  2. Maar meer van belang is, dat een onvergeeflijke houding \u2013 hoewel begrijpelijk \u2013 de opmaat is voor een nieuw conflict. Zelfs tussen Nederland en Indonesi\u00eb, als excuses van tafel worden geveegd. De onderlinge haat tussen de Balkanvolkeren hoopt zich op tot een nieuw conflict. Ook Oekra\u00efne lijkt Rusland nooit te zullen vergeven voor wat het is aangedaan. Overigens is de door een Leidse hoogleraar bedoelde haat van Nederlanders jegens Duitsers volgens mij alleen herkenbaar op het voetbalveld. Er zijn te grote problemen in de wereld, met name de klimaatcrisis, om te blijven hangen in deze onvergeeflijke houding jegens elkaar. De aarde heeft nu meer dan ooit vergeving en eensgezindheid nodig. Voordat het te laat is.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
    1. However hideous the colonial Dutch East Indies had been, slavery was a generally accepted phenomenon among the population. In his lecture for the Indies Genealogical Society in response to his book \u201cMother City. Jakarta, a family history\u201d, Philip Dr\u00f6ge was surprised to find during his search in the colonial archives in Jakarta for his family history that 50% of the inhabitants of the then Batavia were owned by the other 50%. And often even accurately notarized. Not a people enslaved by a colonial government, but slavery at the level of residents themselves. Inhabitants of all kinds, Dutch (Mohamad is indeed right, that the term Dutch does not fit), but also mixed-blooded people (Indos) and the native population, had a property in each other. This nuances the ‘ideology’ detested by Mr Mohamad.<\/li>
    2. But more importantly, an unforgivable attitude \u2013 though understandable \u2013 is the prelude to a new conflict. Even between the Netherlands and Indonesia, if excuses are brushed aside. The mutual hatred between the Balkan peoples is accumulating into a new conflict. Ukraine, too, seems never to forgive Russia for what has been done to it. Incidentally, the hatred of the Dutch towards Germans referred to by a Leiden professor is, in my opinion, only recognizable on the football field. There are too big problems in the world, especially the climate crisis, to linger in this unforgivable attitude towards each other. The earth needs forgiveness and unity now more than ever. Before it is too late.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
