Behalve de halfverteerde resten van bomen en dieren bevat de aarde n\u00f3g een energiebron: warmte. Op de meeste plaatsen op aarde zit deze energie te diep. Aardwarmte om bijvoorbeeld kassen te verwarmen is goed mogelijk en wordt in Nederland dan ook sinds jaar en dag toegepast. Maar om een elektriciteitscentrale aan te drijven, zijn putten nodig tot wel 20 kilometer diep, waar de temperatuur zo\u2019n 500 graden Celsius bedraagt. De diepste put ooit geboord bevindt zich uit de kust van Qatar en reikt tot 12.290 meter onder het aardoppervlak. Veel dieper is niet mogelijk, zo achten de deskundigen. Bij temperaturen van vele honderden graden gaan namelijk de diamanten in de boorkop stuk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">ID.nl wrote in an article about geothermal energy, geothermal energy. Besides the half-digested remains of trees and animals, the earth contains another energy source: heat. In most places on earth this energy is too deep. Geothermal heat to heat greenhouses, for example, is quite possible and has therefore been used in the Netherlands for many years. Op verschillende plekken op de wereld worden technieken ontwikkeld om gesteente te verbranden, in plaats van te verbrijzelen. Als deze boortechnieken inderdaad de veldproeven doorstaan, dan kan er in principe op elke plek ter wereld een geothermale energiecentrale worden gebouwd. Ook in Nederland dus. Natuurlijk zullen nimby\u2019s (\u2018not in my backyard\u2019) zich tegen de boorputten keren, maar velen zullen geothermische centrales op de Maasvlakte of kunstmatige eilanden best zien zitten als alternatief voor windmolens aan de horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">But a technological revolution seems imminent that will change everything. Techniques are being developed in various places in the world to burn rock instead of crushing it. If these drilling techniques indeed pass the field tests, then in principle a geothermal power plant can be built anywhere in the world. So also in the Netherlands.
