Ik heb niets met het Eurosongfestival en ook niets met het haknummer van Joost Klein. Maar zijn uitsluiting doet mij als Nederlander wel wat. Het is toch net als voetbal. Met het aanwakkerende nationalisme in een gepolariseerd Europa is het niet verwonderlijk, dat 750 mln mensen achter hun favoriet gaan staan. De teleurstelling is dan groot, als je team verliest zonder te spelen. Toch lijkt de AVRO niet alle jokers te hebben ingezet om Joost te redden. Een kortgedingrechter in Malm\u00f6 had wellicht redding kunnen brengen. Deze rechter had v\u00f3\u00f3r het optreden van Klein de werking van het zero-tolerancebeleid van de EBU kunnen toetsen op haar proportionaliteit en de beslissing kunnen terugdraaien. Immers, of Klein schuldig is aan het uiten van een dreigement richting de kennelijk herhaaldelijk door Klein gewaarschuwde cameravrouwe om niet te filmen en welke straf passend en geboden is, wordt pas na het strafrechtelijk onderzoek duidelijk. Daar heeft Joost Klein en de rest van fanclub Nederland dan niets meer aan.
Maar ongewild heeft de actie van Joost Klein mogelijk blootgelegd, dat de verontwaardiging over grensoverschrijdend gedrag \u2013 want daar lijkt het op \u2013 een grens heeft bereikt. Immers, wat is het verschil met het horkerige optreden van Mathijs van Nieuwkerk en Tom Egbers jegens hun medewerkers en de verontwaardiging daarover? Ervan uitgaande, dat Klein tussen grensoverschrijding en bedreiging heeft gehandeld zou fanclub Nederland toch iets meer verontwaardigd richting Joost Klein moeten zijn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have nothing to do with the Eurovision Song Contest and also nothing with Joost Klein’s heel song. But his exclusion does mean something to me as a Dutch person. It’s just like football. With nationalism on the rise in a polarized Europe, it is not surprising that 750 million people are supporting their favorite. The disappointment is great when your team loses without playing. However, the AVRO does not seem to have used all the jokers to save Joost. An interim relief judge in Malm\u00f6 might have saved the day. Before Klein’s actions, this judge could have assessed the proportionality of the EBU’s zero-tolerance policy and reversed the decision. After all, whether Klein is guilty of making a threat to the camerawoman who was apparently repeatedly warned by Klein not to film and what punishment is appropriate and required, will only become clear after the criminal investigation. That will no longer be of any use to Joost Klein and the rest of the Netherlands fan club.
But unintentionally, Joost Klein’s action may have exposed that the outrage about transgressive behavior – because that is what it seems – has reached a limit. After all, what is the difference with the jerky behavior of Mathijs van Nieuwkerk and Tom Egbers towards their employees and the outrage about it? Assuming that Klein has acted between crossing the line and threatening, the Dutch fan club should be a little more indignant towards Joost Klein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
