Mijn gedachten dwarrelden naar mijn ouders, maar ook naar bootvluchtelingen op de Middellandse Zee of toen uit Vietnam, die huis en haard verlaten en kloppen op de toegangsdeur van Nederland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-anak-indi wp-block-embed-anak-indi\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"yk2zdOcpmg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anak-indie.nl\/\">Home<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Home&#8221; &#8212; Anak Indi\u00eb\" src=\"https:\/\/anak-indie.nl\/embed\/#?secret=Y6nh5kWUrM#?secret=yk2zdOcpmg\" data-secret=\"yk2zdOcpmg\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-33622f3bb97d96b51108eed6eb910c29\">De maakster van de film legt het verhaal vast van mensen, die gedwongen waren na de Tweede Wereldoorlog per pakketboot hun moederland, het voormalig Nederlands-Indi\u00eb, te verlaten. Als deel van de geschiedenis van Nederland, als cultureel erfgoed, als legacy. Anders dreigt zo goed als zeker de vergetelheid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-523d61c26ba9f84480c56c077275d15b\">Voor vele Indische Nederlanders van de eerste en tweede generatie zal het een feest van herkenning zijn, maar ook een pijnlijke herinnering. Mijn reeds lang overleden Indische ouders met 5 kinderen hadden het bij aankomst niet gemakkelijk. Als tweede generatie kind van spijtoptanten heb ik een caleidoscoop aan herkenbare beelden gezien van mijn jonge jaren in de net uitgeroepen republiek Indonesi\u00eb en van het na aankomst opgroeien en ouder worden in Nederland. Impressies van de spijtoptanten, die korte tijd Indonesisch staatsburger zijn geweest en later met het vliegtuig kwamen, ontbreken echter. De Molukse gemeenschap \u2013 weliswaar ook anak (kind) van Indi\u00eb \u2013 kent in de documentaire daarbij haar eigen verhaal en is anders dan die van de Indische Nederlander, met zelfspot Indo genoemd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-e0b042696897a93898e35533140133bb\">De onwetende Nederlander kan zich een beeld vormen van de veerkracht van de kinderen uit Indi\u00eb, die na achterlaten van hun hele hebben en houden en na kille ontvangst in Nederland een toekomst hebben weten op te bouwen. Een toekomst waarin niet integratie, maar vrijwillige assimilatie \u2013 niet gericht op behoud van de eigen identiteit \u2013 voorop stond. Deze film wil vastleggen wat deze mensen desondanks aan Indische \u00e9n Molukse cultuur, gewoonten en gemeenschapszin hebben meegenomen \u00e9n doorgegeven aan de derde generatie. Met een traan, maar vooral met een lach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-dd9ec3b740d0e956045cef169d51c47a\">Ik vind, dat Anak Indi\u00eb daarin is geslaagd. Maar de film is eigenlijk een ode aan de veerkracht van vluchtelingen in het algemeen die hun weg moeten vinden in hun nieuwe vaderland. Het klimaat voor de vluchteling is guur. Mogelijk, dat Anak Indi\u00eb daar wat tropische warmte aan toe kan voegen. Of zoals een echte Indo lachend zou zeggen: \u201cAjoh soedah, niet piekeren, eerst makan\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-1c7e97fca7021e0805d46075bb2bb488\">Immediately after I had seen the documentary by Hetty Naaijkens-Retel Helmrich, Anak Indi\u00eb (NRC 25\/6\/25), in the Verkadefabriek in Den Bosch, I wondered what I had been watching. My thoughts drifted to my parents, but also to boat refugees on the Mediterranean Sea or from Vietnam at the time, who left their homes and knocked on the entrance door of the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-600e7183e345c6770bc5eb1127136cd2\">The maker of the film records the story of people who were forced to leave their motherland, the former Dutch East Indies, by packet boat after the Second World War. As part of the history of the Netherlands, as cultural heritage, as legacy. Otherwise, oblivion is almost certain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-f1fd027c0564c8f89af75a88544ca3ab\">For many first and second generation Dutch Indies people it will be a feast of recognition, but also a painful memory. My long-deceased parents with 5 children did not have it easy upon arrival. As a second generation child of regretters, I have seen a kaleidoscope of recognizable images of my early years in the newly proclaimed Republic of Indonesia and of growing up and growing older in the Netherlands after arrival. Impressions of the regretters, who were Indonesian citizens for a short time and later arrived by plane, are lacking, however. The Moluccan community \u2013 albeit also anak (child) of the Indies \u2013 has its own story in the documentary and is different from that of the Dutch Indies people, self-mockingly called Indo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-ca125a1a8f53123e8bca68e32f110d07\">The ignorant Dutch person can form an image of the resilience of the children from the Indies, who, after leaving all their possessions behind and after a cold reception in the Netherlands, have managed to build a future. A future in which not integration, but voluntary assimilation \u2013 not aimed at preserving one&#8217;s own identity \u2013 was paramount. This film aims to capture what these people nevertheless brought with them in terms of Indian and Moluccan culture, customs and community spirit and passed it on to the third generation. With a tear, but above all with a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-af6faa5911966593c4a580c0e9c99f26\">I think that Anak Indi\u00eb succeeded in that. But the film is actually an ode to the resilience of refugees in general who have to find their way in their new homeland. The climate for the refugee is bleak. Possibly, Anak Indi\u00eb can add some tropical warmth to that.
