What kind of society do we want in the Netherlands now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wat voor samenleving willen we zijn in NL? Dat we als 18 mln burgers voor elkaar zorgen, dat alleen de subgemeenschap van economisch actieven telt of dat we een combinatie van beide zijn? Het is te gemakkelijk om het antwoord alleen aan de politici over te laten. Immers, er lijkt een discrepantie gevoeld te worden tussen de burgers en hun vertegenwoordigers, de politici.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het antwoord is namelijk van groot belang voor de toekomst van Nederland vanwege de komende, gevraagde grote financi\u00eble offers. Laat de inhoud van de portemonnee van de Nederlander zien, dan weet je hoe het met de solidariteit is gesteld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De vergrijzing is een belangrijk ijkpunt van die solidariteit. Het wrange is dat de welvaart er voor heeft gezorgd, dat mensen langer leven en de noodzaak niet meer bestond veel kinderen op de wereld te brengen. Wat in vroegere financieel mindere tijden een noodzaak was als \u2018pensioen\u2019 voor de oude dag, is dat nu niet meer nodig vanwege het AOW systeem van omslag. De huidige werkenden zorgen voor de AOW uitkeringen van de ‘oudjes’. Daarbij krijg je te horen bij de opbouw van je aanvullende ABP pensioen, dat je niet de volledige premie hoeft te betalen, omdat de AOW daarin voorziet (franchise). Een opgewekt vertrouwen, zou je kunnen zeggen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maar die financiering staat dus steeds meer onder druk, omdat de demografische samenstelling uit het lood is geslagen. Niet ineens, maar al vele jaren voorzien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dan maakt een bericht over de opkruipende financiering van de AOW uitkering door de algemene middelen je als gepensioneerde toch ongerust (NRC 19\/7\/25). Te meer, omdat de studiegroep begroting adviseert om 7 miljard te bezuinigen in de volgende kabinetsperiode en daarbij de vergrijzing op de korrel te nemen. Oplossingen zoals de vermogende AOWer een extra bijdrage te vragen, voelen aan als een brandverzekeringspremie betalen, terwijl je huis in brand staat. Had je toen maar de kans gekregen die franchise zelf te betalen, dan zou het aanvullende ABP pensioen hoger zijn geweest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dus dan wordt de eerste vraag steeds pregnanter. Wat voor samenleving willen we zijn in NL?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of society do we want in the Netherlands? That we, as 18 million citizens, care for each other, that only the economically active sub-community counts, or that we are a combination of both? It’s too easy to leave the answer solely to politicians. After all, there seems to be a perceived disconnect between citizens and their representatives, the politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is crucial for the future of the Netherlands because of the upcoming, required major financial sacrifices. Show the contents of the Dutch wallet and you’ll know the state of solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aging population is an important benchmark for that solidarity. The irony is that prosperity has ensured that people live longer, eliminating the need to have many children. What was a necessity in earlier financially difficult times as a “pension” for old age is no longer necessary due to the pay-as-you-go AOW system. Current workers provide the AOW benefits for the “oldies.” In addition, when you’re building up your supplementary ABP pension, you’ll be told you don’t have to pay the full premium, because the AOW (state pension) provides for this (deductible). A sense of confidence, you might say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that funding is increasingly under pressure because the demographic composition has been thrown off balance. Not suddenly, but anticipated for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, a report about the creeping funding of the AOW benefit from general funds makes you, as a pensioner, uneasy (NRC 19\/7\/25). This is especially true because the budget study group recommends cutting \u20ac7 billion in the next cabinet term, targeting the aging population. Solutions like asking wealthy AOW recipients for an additional contribution feel like paying fire insurance premiums while your house is on fire. If only you had been given the opportunity to pay that deductible yourself back then, the supplementary ABP pension would have been higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, the first question becomes increasingly poignant: What kind of society do we want in the Netherlands?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
