Reconciliation now? Not at the Indies Monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De jaarlijkse herdenking van het einde van de Japanse bezetting op 15 augustus 1945 in het voormalig Nederlands-Indi\u00eb bij het Indisch monument in de Scheveningse Bosjes is een herdenking van de slachtoffers van die bezetting. Voor overlevenden en hun nazaten een moment waar zij stil staan bij hun verdrietige herinneringen. Op die plek en op dat moment is er geen plaats voor een ritueel van verzoening, zoals het leggen van een krans door de Japanse ambassadeur (NRC 30\/6\/26 Tijd voor verzoening met Japan) Daar is die herdenking niet voor bedoeld. En als het al tijd is voor een verzoening, dan zeker niet bij het Indisch herinneringsmonument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maar belangrijker is, dat voor een verzoening er minimaal twee partijen zijn, die elkaar verdriet hebben aangedaan en nu willen terugkeren naar de situatie van v\u00f3\u00f3r dat verdriet. Daar is natuurlijk bij de overlevenden en hun nazaten geen sprake van. Verdriet is een individuele zaak. Van de overlevenden zullen velen dat verdriet hebben verwerkt. Maar voor velen is dat traumatisch verdriet zo diep ingesleten, dat zij er tot op de dag van vandaag er niet over kunnen praten. Laat staan, dat zij de goede bedoeling van de kranslegging door de Japanse ambassadeur willen, nee kunnen inzien. Geef deze mensen de rust en stilte van het herdenken bij het monument. Het is een van de weinige dingen die zij nog hebben bij de verwerking van het verdriet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual commemoration of the end of the Japanese occupation of the former Dutch East Indies\u2014held on August 15, 1945, at the *Indisch Monument* (Indies Monument) in the Scheveningse Bosjes\u2014is dedicated to the victims of that occupation. For survivors and their descendants, it is a moment to reflect on their painful memories. That specific time and place is not the setting for a ritual of reconciliation, such as the laying of a wreath by the Japanese ambassador (referencing the *NRC* article “Time for reconciliation with Japan” from June 30, 2026). That is not the purpose of this commemoration. And even if the time for reconciliation has indeed come, it certainly should not take place at the Indies memorial monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More importantly, reconciliation requires at least two parties who have inflicted pain on one another and now wish to return to the state of affairs that existed before that pain occurred. That is clearly not the case for the survivors and their descendants. Grief is a personal matter. While many survivors may have processed that grief, for others, the traumatic sorrow is so deeply ingrained that they remain unable to speak about it to this day\u2014let alone recognize, or even wish to recognize, the good intentions behind the Japanese ambassador\u2019s wreath-laying. Let these people find peace and quiet as they commemorate the past at the monument; it is one of the few things they still have to help them process their grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
