Het is wel iets, waarvan de schoonheid altijd voor- en tegenstanders kent. In het interview met Rachel Pownall, hoogleraar Arts &amp; Finance aan de Universiteit Maastricht (NRC 18\/9\/26 Kunst dreigt een luxegoed van de ultrarijken te worden), ontbreekt die dan ook. Maar het is ook meteen een vaag onderwerp om er over te praten. De overheid hanteert bij het toekennen van een uitkering of subsidie aan een kunstenaar geen definitie anders dan bijv. met goed gevolg hebben doorlopen van de kunstacademie. Die academie zelf richt zich op het proces achter het kunstwerk.<br>Dus wat is kunst dan?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-2 wp-block-paragraph\">Belangrijk vooral, als je je zorgen maakt, dat kunst alleen de ultrarijken toekomt en daardoor de overheidsfinanciering van de gewone kunstenaar op de tocht zet. Die overheid is niet van plan de rijken te ondersteunen. Maar wordt de soep zo heet gegeten?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\">Net als bij cultuur staat voorop, dat kunst eigenlijk niet succesvol mag zijn voor de overheid om financieel te ondersteunen. Immers, dan pas werkt de kunstenaar aan een proces wat intrinsiek kunst is, zonder precies te weten wat dat nu is.<br>Een paradox: het bestaan van de kunstenaar is pas succesvol als het werk van de kunstenaar niet succesvol is. In die zin lijkt de zorg van Rachel Pownall overtrokken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\">Daarbij lijkt de benadering van Pownall uit te gaan van een kunstenaar die geldelijk gewin nastreeft. De kunstenaar weet al lang, dat succes pas na de dood volgt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-5 wp-block-paragraph\">There is no single definition of art. However, its beauty invariably has both proponents and detractors. Consequently, such a definition is absent from the interview with Rachel Pownall, Professor of Arts &amp; Finance at Maastricht University (NRC, 18\/9\/26: &#8220;Art at risk of becoming a luxury good for the ultra-rich&#8221;). It is, after all, a notoriously vague subject to discuss. When granting benefits or subsidies to an artist, the government employs no definition other than criteria such as having successfully completed art school. The art school itself focuses on the process behind the artwork.<br>So, what exactly is art?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-6 wp-block-paragraph\">This question is particularly important if one worries that art is becoming the exclusive preserve of the ultra-rich, thereby jeopardizing government funding for the ordinary artist. The government has no intention of subsidizing the wealthy. But is the situation really as dire as all that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-7 wp-block-paragraph\">As with culture in general, a key premise is that, for the government to provide financial support, art should not actually be &#8220;successful.&#8221; After all, only then is the artist engaged in a process that is intrinsically art\u2014without knowing precisely what that art is.<br>It is a paradox: an artist\u2019s career is only successful if their work is not successful. In that sense, Rachel Pownall\u2019s concerns seem overstated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-vivid-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-8 wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, Pownall\u2019s approach appears to assume an artist who seeks financial gain.
