A diesel deal with Russia right now is MAGA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump is een dealmaker. Al is het met de duivel, als dat van zijn bible-belt achterban zou mogen. Dat alles voor het grotere goed: maga. Juist als dat proces hapert, gaat de president vol op het orgel van de \u2018dealmaker\u2019 staan. Opportunisme is daarbij niet vreemd, aangezien hij ook tegenstander is van landen die Rusland economisch steunen. Immers, een deal is een deal. Daarom is de afspraak met zijn Russische collega over de verkoop van diesel niet vreemd (NRC 10\/10\/26).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maar zijn maga-achterban is hem wel heilig. Immers, die moeten hem door de aanstaande verkiezingen helpen. Uit onderzoek blijkt, dat diezelfde achterban voor een zeer groot deel achter Trump staat in de oorlog tegen Iran. Dat de dieselprijzen daardoor door het dak gaan is dus ingecalculeerd. Dat Trump dit tracht te repareren door een voor de Amerikaanse geopolitiek irrelevante staat de grond in te boren, laat daadkracht zien. Verder zal het zijn maga-achterban worst wezen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump is a dealmaker\u2014even if it means making a deal with the devil, provided his Bible Belt base would allow it. It is all for the greater good: MAGA. Precisely when that process stalls, the president leans heavily into his “dealmaker” persona. Opportunism plays a role here, given that he also opposes countries that support Russia economically; after all, a deal is a deal. That is why the agreement with his Russian counterpart regarding diesel sales is not surprising (NRC 10\/10\/26).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet his MAGA base is sacrosanct to him; after all, they are the ones who must carry him through the upcoming elections. Research shows that this very base largely supports Trump in the war against Iran. Consequently, the fact that diesel prices are skyrocketing as a result has been factored in. Trump\u2019s attempt to remedy this by crushing a state that is geopolitically irrelevant to the US demonstrates decisiveness. Beyond that, his MAGA base couldn’t care less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
