A civilized society: what we want to be together now.
Bullseye! Terecht voorziet Gabriël van den Brink een donkere woelige winter in zijn Opinie (NRC 4/12) na bespreking van het boek van de filosoof Patrick Deneen. “Daarbij moeten we een eigentijds antwoord vinden op de vraag wat wij als beschaafde samenleving willen zijn” stelt hij. Wie zijn die ‘we’ of ‘wij’ dan wel? Ik denk niet, dat daar heel neoliberaal Nederland onder wordt verstaan.
Niet die 19 mediageile politieke partijen met aanhang die veelal het eigen fanatieke gelijk op de tong hebben; niet de islamofoben, de antisemieten, de antichristenen en de antilhbti; niet de feestvierende voetbalsupporters van de Hollandse leeuwen én leeuwinnen; niet diegenen, die achter het stuur gezeten transformeren van een eerbare dr. Jekyll in een hufterige mr. Hyde; niet de op toprendement beluste en marktverstorende beleggers in huizen; ook niet de ‘wir haben es nicht gewußt’ belastingontwijkers; niet de georganiseerde drugsmaffiosi in draaipunt Nederland; niet de koopzieke Black Friday adepten; niet de in aantal waanzinnig toegenomen miljonairs en miljardairs; niet de aan het scheldinfuus van sociale media gehangen internetverslaafden; niet de kijkers van Heel Holland bakt, Dancing with the stars, Boer zoekt vrouw en andere voyeur tv. En ook niet te vergeten de door Van den Brink beschreven stuurlui aan wal zonder incasseringsvermogen met kritiek op de zeilkunsten van het demissionair kabinet Rutte.
Dus een heel groot deel heeft al lang uitgemaakt wat we’ of ‘wij’ willen zijn als beschaafde samenleving. De rest kijkt zwijgend toe. Dan blijven er weinig Nederlanders over, die op het antwoord wachten. Cynisme, natuurlijk. Beschaving – wat dat ook is – is wat ‘we’ als gemene deler samen willen. De pandemie is een test of ‘we’ dat samen willen. Ik ben – anders dan Van den Brink – van mening, dat ‘we’ naast alle initiatieven vanzelf richting een antwoord werken. Daarbij ga ik ervan uit, dat er nog zoiets als sociale cohesie bestaat volgens de definitie van Emile Durkheim: de lijm die de samenleving bij elkaar houdt.
Anders dan een ramp of oorlog wordt de doodsangst voor het muterende virus, maar ook voor klimaatverandering niet door iedereen gevoeld. Dat komt nog. En dat verenigt namelijk, volgens de geschiedenis. De komende donkere woelige jaargetijden zullen dat laten zien.

Who are these ‘we’ or ‘us’? I do not think that this is understood to mean the very neoliberal Netherlands.
Not those 19 media-crazy political parties with supporters who often have their own fanatical right on their tongue; not the Islamophobes, the anti-Semites, the anti-Christians and the anti-HBTI; not the partying football supporters of the Dutch lions and lionesses; not the ones behind the wheel who transform from an honorable Dr. Jekyll into a bastard Mr. Hyde; not the top-yield and market-distorting housing investors; neither do the ‘wir haben es nicht gewußt’ tax avoiders; not the organized drug mafiosi in pivot point Netherlands; not the shopping-sick Black Friday adepts; not the insanely multiplied millionaires and billionaires; not the social media addicted internet addicts; not the viewers of Heel Holland bakes, Dancing with the stars, Farmer seeks wife and other voyeur TV. And also not to forget the helmsmen ashore described by Van den Brink as without resilience with criticism of the sailing skills of the outgoing Rutte cabinet.
So a very large part has long been decided what we’ or ‘we’ want to be as a civilized society. The rest watch in silence. Then there will be few Dutch people left waiting for the answer. Cynicism, of course. Civilization – whatever that is – is what ‘we’ want together as a common denominator. The pandemic is a test of whether ‘we’ want that together. In contrast to Van den Brink, I am of the opinion that ‘we’, in addition to all initiatives, automatically work towards an answer. I also assume that there is still such a thing as social cohesion according to Emile Durkheim’s definition: the glue that holds society together.
Unlike a disaster or war, the fear of death for the mutating virus, but also for climate change, is not felt by everyone. That will come. And that unites, according to history. The coming dark turbulent seasons will show that.
