Op weg naar een koude oorlog situatie á la de 60erjaren van de vorige eeuw. Het zgn. vredesdividend van de laatste decennia is geïncasseerd. Verschil met de koude oorlog indertijd is, dat op wereldniveau meer totalitaire spelers bij het conflict zijn betrokken. En dat ondergronds reeds lang een cyberwarfare woedt. Dat realtime (fake of niet) de spanning die deze betrokkenheid met zich meebrengt digitaal wordt uitvergroot. Ternauwernood werd toen voorkomen, dat de koude oorlog een hete werd door een militaire ‘showdown’ in Berlijn en in de Caraibische wateren. Rusland knipperde als eerste met de ogen. De vraag is wie bij een volgende koude confrontatie als eerste de ogen zal knipperen. Het zou zomaar Europa kunnen zijn. En dat is wat het redactioneel commentaar bedoelt met “een vergissing van historische omvang”.

The difference with the Cold War at the time is that more totalitarian players were involved in the conflict at world level. And that cyber warfare has been raging underground for a long time.
