You now simply commit a seat robbery in broad daylight.
“Politiek is niet voor oprechte mensen; we willen meer gewone mensen in de politiek; hoe we iemand met een nieuwe bestuurscultuur terugjagen in de kennel van de oude; geef me duizend Debora’s voor één Eddy; als je ziet hoe je uitgelachen en weggehoond wordt, denk je wel tien keer na voor je je kandidaat stelt voor de lokale politiek”. Duidelijk is, dat Christiaan Weijts het opneemt voor het niet zo nieuwbakken statenlid Debora Fernald (NRC 2/6/2023). Op sociale media is geen normale discussie meer te voeren, zeker als je opkomt voor een ander. En in dat gure klimaat van polarisatie en leedvermaak in Nederland roeit Weijts onverwachts tegen de stroom in. Doe je dat op straat, dan is de kans groot dat je het – letterlijk – niet overleeft. Dus mooi van Weijts. Maar niet terecht.
Politicos is ‘alles wat de burgermaatschappij in de stadstaat betrof’. Zo staat het geschreven in de Griekse oudheid. Dat is niet veranderd. Die burgermaatschappij is zoals het is. Het leven op straat dus. Als Debora Fernald zich sterk maakt tegen onrecht en discriminatie, dan moet zij zeker niet naïef zijn door zich te laten buitensluiten. Maar zich ‘skills’, vaardigheden, aanmeten. Met voorkeursstemmen in de politiek bovendrijven heeft als nadeel, dat je het straatgevecht hebt gemist.
Dit is een goede les voor haar. Niet, omdat zij niet op Volt had moeten stemmen. Want dat mag zij. Ook al zou dat zijn uit rancune jegens haar partij Groenlinks. Maar wel omdat zij moet staan voor al die voorkeursstemmen en dat zij daarover nadenkt langer dan haar neus lang is.
“Politics is not for honest people; we want more ordinary people in politics; how we drive someone with a new management culture back into the kennel of the old one; give me a thousand Deborahs for one Eddy; when you see how you are laughed at and ridiculed, you think ten times before you run for local politics”. It is clear that Christiaan Weijts stands up for the not so new member of parliament Debora Fernald (NRC 2/6/2023). It is no longer possible to have a normal discussion on social media, especially if you stand up for someone else. And in that harsh climate of polarization and gloating in the Netherlands, Weijts unexpectedly rows against the current. If you do that on the street, chances are that you will – literally – not survive. So nice of Weijts. But not rightly so.
Politicos is “everything that concerned civil society in the city-state.” This is how it is written in ancient Greece. That hasn’t changed. That civil society is what it is. So life on the street. If Debora Fernald stands up against injustice and discrimination, then she should certainly not be naive by being excluded. But put on skills. Floating with preferential votes in politics has the disadvantage that you missed the street fight.
This is a good lesson for her. Not because she shouldn’t have voted for Volt. Because she can. Even if that would be out of spite towards her party Groenlinks. But because she has to stand for all those preferential votes and that she thinks about it longer than her nose is long.
