Zo, het bestaat dus nog, ‘fakenieuws’ maken, die niet opzettelijk tot stand is gekomen. Vroeger zei je dat dit gewoon een fout was. Excuses, herstel en zand erover. Dat zal bij het bericht van onder meer NRC over de raketexplosie bij het ziekenhuis in Gaza niet het geval zijn. NRC zou onder tijdsdruk de door Hamas beheerste berichtgeving hebben overgenomen, dat het een aanval van Israël zou zijn geweest (NRC 21/10/23). Maar niet alleen de voorbarige berichtgeving over de explosie is gevaarlijk voor Israël – zoals gesuggereerd in diverse kwaliteitskranten – maar volgens mij ook de correctie ervan. Immers, daarmee wordt de invloed van het grote Israël op een partijdige nieuwsgaring over de onderdrukte Palestijnen bewezen – ook al is dat niet waar. Er bestaat immers in deze polarisatie alleen het eigen gelijk. Het is duidelijk, dat de rijkste terreurorganisatie van de wereld ernstige schade wilde toebrengen aan de burgers van Israël. Maar ook dat dit ten koste van de eigen burgers van de Gazastrook mag gaan. Immers, de zware vergelding door Israël was te verwachten. Het hogere doel is volgens mij het sentiment ‘pro Palestina en tegen Israël’ op wereldschaal te mobiliseren. Dat lukt aardig. Had Israël de Bijbelse weg gevolgd door Hamas ‘de andere wang’ toe te keren, dan zou het de steun van de wereld hebben gekregen en zou dat mogelijk het einde van Hamas hebben betekend. Maar daar heeft Israël geheel volgens verwachting van Hamas niet voor gekozen. Daarmee is de terreurorganisatie een stukje verder om in het verhaal van David en Goliath de plaats van David in te nemen. Want dat is hun werkelijke doel.

Under time pressure, NRC is said to have adopted reporting controlled by Hamas that it was an attack by Israel (NRC 21/10/23). But it is not only the premature reporting of the explosion that is dangerous for Israel – as suggested in several quality newspapers – but also, in my opinion, its correction. After all, this proves the influence of great Israel on partisan news gathering about the oppressed Palestinians – even if that is not true. After all, in this polarization there is only one’s own right. It is clear that the world’s richest terrorist organization wanted to cause serious harm to the citizens of Israel. But also that this may be at the expense of the Gaza Strip’s own citizens. After all, Israel’s heavy retaliation was to be expected. The higher goal, in my opinion, is to mobilize sentiment ‘pro Palestine and against Israel’ on a global scale. That works quite well. Had Israel followed the Biblical path by turning the other cheek to Hamas, it would have received the support of the world and that might have meant the end of Hamas. But Israel, entirely in line with Hamas’s expectations, did not opt for this. This means that the terrorist organization is a step further in taking David’s place in the story of David and Goliath. Because that is their real purpose.
