Het is een klein bericht in het NRC (17/10/23), dat bananenondernemer Daniel Noboa de presidentsverkiezingen in Equador heeft gewonnen. Wel een belangrijk bericht voor Nederland. Hij wil zich sterk maken tegen corruptie in zijn land en tegen de cocaïne export, die met die corruptie samenhangt. Ecuador is de afgelopen jaren uitgegroeid tot een van belangrijkste exportlanden van cocaïne richting Europa en de Verenigde Staten. Cocaïne die aankomt, komt steeds vaker uit dat land en Europa heeft de VS de afgelopen jaren vervangen als grootste afnemer: België, Nederland en Spanje zijn de belangrijkste bestemmingen. Na de VS en Spanje was Nederland in 2022 de belangrijkste bestemming van de in beslag genomen drugs. Aldus NOS Nieuwsuur in juni 2023.
Een voorgenomen douane-verdrag tussen NL en Ecuador moet de uitwisseling van meer informatie mogelijk maken.
Voor NL is het dus belangrijk hoeveel moeite deze president gaat steken in de bestrijding van de cocaïne export. Cocaïne, waarmee de drugskartels veel geld verdienen om het land in corruptie onder te dompelen. Kartels die er niet voor terugdeinzen een vorige presidentskandidaat, strijder tegen de kartels, te vermoorden. De voorgangers van Noboa zijn ook, maar tevergeefs de strijd aangegaan. Daar lijkt Noboa geen verschil in te kunnen maken. Cocaïnehandel is namelijk gewoon een bijzondere vorm van handeldrijven waar vraag en aanbod elkaar ergens vinden. In Nederland dus, waar de gebruiker de schouders ophaalt bij het cocaïne geweld in Ecuador.
Zolang de cocaïne gretig haar weg vindt naar de neusgaten van de werkverslaafde Nederlander, is het voor Noboa dweilen met de bloedige kraan open.
