Dutch education has a cultural problem now
Helemaal eens met Eric C. Hendriks-Kim (NRC 13/8/22 Het Nederlandse onderwijs heeft een cultureel probleem), dat Nederlandse beleidsmakers eens naar hun eigen culturele navel moeten staren om het Nederlands onderwijssysteem op een hoger plan te tillen. Hij vindt, dat veel te winnen valt door naar China te kijken. Niet om het schoolsysteem, anders zou terugkeer naar de 50/60er jaren ook volstaan. Maar om de durf van de Chinese beleidsmakers om de scherpe kantjes van het systeem weg te halen, een systeem van hiërarchie en competitie. Dat de OESO heeft vastgesteld, dat “van de 35 landen die ze heeft onderzocht, Nederland de wanordelijkste klassen heeft”, is iets om voor te schamen. Uitwassen van de Nederlandse cultuur. Hendriks-Kim voorziet echter een terughoudendheid van de Nederlandse beleidsmaker om voorstellen te doen strijdig met de eigen cultuur, omdat zij ook kinderen zijn van die cultuur. Een cultuur van egalitair onderwijs zonder gezag van en ontzag voor de leraren en abominabel slechte leesvaardigheid van de ongedisciplineerde leerling. Hendriks-Kim is helaas ook kind van die cultuur. Door voorzichtig en wollig op te merken, dat “Nederlanders, die internationaal in het egalitaire extreem zitten, … discipline en verheffing – de verticale dimensie van onderwijs en persoonlijke groei – niet uit het oog (moeten) verliezen”, zet natuurlijk geen zoden aan de dijk. Zeg gewoon, dat we moeten opschuiven richting Chinees onderwijsmodel en leerlingen verplicht aangewezen boeken moeten lezen en leraren meer met hun vuist op tafel moeten slaan.
Completely agree with Eric C. Hendriks-Kim (NRC 13/8/22 Dutch education has a cultural problem), that Dutch policymakers should look at their own cultural navel to lift the Dutch education system to a higher level. He believes that much can be gained by looking at China. Not because of the school system, otherwise going back to the 50’s and 60’s would suffice. But because of the daring of Chinese policymakers to remove the sharp edges of the system, a system of hierarchy and competition. That the OECD has determined that “of the 35 countries it has surveyed, the Netherlands has the most disordered classes”, is something to be ashamed of. Outgrowths of Dutch culture. Hendriks-Kim foresees, however, a reluctance on the part of Dutch policymakers to make proposals that conflict with their own culture, because they are also children of that culture. A culture of egalitarian education with no authority and awe of the teachers and abominably poor reading skills of the undisciplined student. Hendriks-Kim is unfortunately also a child of that culture. By cautiously and woolly remarking that “The Dutch, who are internationally in the egalitarian extreme, … do not lose sight of discipline and elevation – the vertical dimension of education and personal growth”, of course, does not make any sense. on the dike. Just say we need to move towards the Chinese education model and make students compulsory to read designated books and teachers to slam their fists on the table more.
