Flights can no longer sang Jenny Arean and Frans Halsema. Not even for commercial quiz programs
Een prachtig artikel van Rinske Koelewijn (NRC 26/6/23 Hoelang kun je kijken naar het opblazen en knopen van ballonnen?) over het tenenkrommend aanbod van commerciële quizprogramma’s op de zaterdagavond televisie. Gerrit Komrij had daar een mooi woord voor: de kwelbuis. Maar mag je dan niet een slechte ondernemer zijn en als commerciële tv zender een format presenteren, die gedoemd is te mislukken? Natuurlijk, het is eigen geld en de algemene middelen hebben daar geen last van. En het zou niet de eerste keer zijn, dat een falend programma in de voortzetting én de herhaling alsnog succesvol blijkt te zijn. Die luxe heeft een commerciële zender met vet op de botten. En de kijker stemt toch met de voeten: de afstandbediening (of stemcomputer) is altijd binnen bereik. Ondanks de ‘aanloopverliezen’ denk ik toch, dat het gepresenteerde format zoals Blow up en Kwis met ballen steeds meer zal aanslaan. Het nieuws in de wereld wordt namelijk te ingewikkeld, rampspoed nadert in snel tempo of is er al. Mensen in geestesnood lijken Nederland te overspoelen. Vluchten kan niet meer zongen Jenny Arean en Frans Halsema toen al. Dan is het zo gek nog niet om naar programma’s te kijken die de gedachten doen stilstaan en de geest doden. Let maar op, de commerciële zenders hebben goud in handen.
A wonderful article by Rinske Koelewijn (NRC 26/6/23 How long can you watch the inflating and tying of balloons?) about the cringeworthy range of commercial quiz programs on Saturday evening television. Gerrit Komrij had a nice word for this: the seepage pipe. But shouldn’t you be a bad entrepreneur and present a format as a commercial TV channel that is doomed to fail? Of course, it is own money and the general resources are not affected by it. And it wouldn’t be the first time that a failing program turns out to be successful in both continuation and repetition. That luxury has a commercial channel with fat on its bones. And the viewer still votes with his feet: the remote control (or voting computer) is always within reach. Despite the ‘start-up losses’, I still think that the presented format such as Blow up and Kwis with balls will become more and more popular. The news in the world is becoming too complicated, disaster is approaching quickly or is already there. People in mental distress seem to be flooding the Netherlands. Fleeing is no longer sang Jenny Arean and Frans Halsema back then. Then it’s not so crazy to watch programs that stop the mind and kill the spirit. Mind you, the commercial channels have gold in their hands.
