EU member states now conclude an agreement on voluntary reduction of gas consumption
Met het oog op onzekere Russische leveranties moeten lidstaten nu al proberen 15 procent minder gas te verbruiken. De deal is vrijblijvend en er zijn nu al uitzonderingen bedongen (NRC 27/7/2022 EU-lidstaten sluiten akkoord over vrijwillig verminderen gasverbruik). Ik fiets op een zonovergoten fietspad en heb net boodschappen gedaan bij de grootgrutter. Natuurlijk merk ik, dat mijn boodschappen in mijn fietstas een jaar geleden goedkoper waren. Het NIBUD schat dat één op de drie gezinnen moeite heeft het huishoudboekje in balans te krijgen. Maar twee op de drie gaan dus nog steeds flierefluitend op vakantie naar Frankrijk, uitwaaien in Scheveningen, naar de theaterproductie Tina en vooral op zoek naar de best betalende werkgever. Natuurlijk, er is oorlog in Europa. Maar de bommen vallen niet hier en na Covid hebben wij het verdiend om te genieten. Zoals ik nu op de fiets doe. Plots stel ik mij voor, dat de prijsstijging van elk product bijv. een half volkoren brood als een pistoolschot aanvoelt. Elke prijsstijging van alle levensmiddelen samen voelt als als een repeterend mitrailleurssalvo. De stijgende gas en olieprijzen zijn artilleriegranaten, die de onbeschermde huizen van lagere inkomens vernietigen. De hogere inkomens zijn veilig ingegraven. De mitrailleursalvo’s en granaten ketsen af op hun dikke bunkers met geld. Maar 15% minder gas gebruiken is andere koek. Minder douchen, verwarming lager, minder gaspitten gebruiken, zij voelen aan als ontploffende scud raketten. Bij iedereen. Met straks de dreiging, dat er in de winter te weinig gas is, omdat de reserves niet voldoende zijn aangevuld, lijkt dit aan te voelen als de dreiging van een kleine tactische kernbom. Opeens fiets ik helemaal niet meer lekker en ga ik snel naar huis om eens goed na te denken wat mijn bijdrage is. Dat zou de rest van Nederland ook moeten doen.

I cycle on a sun-drenched cycle path and have just gone shopping at the large grutter. Of course I notice that my groceries in my bicycle bag were cheaper a year ago. The NIBUD estimates that one in three families has difficulty balancing the household book. But two out of three still go on holiday to France, get a breath of fresh air in Scheveningen, see the theater production Tina and, above all, look for the best paying employer. Of course, there is war in Europe. But the bombs don’t fall here and after Covid we deserved to enjoy. Like I do on the bike now. Suddenly I imagine that the price increase of any product, for example half a whole-wheat loaf of bread, feels like a pistol shot. Every price increase of all foodstuffs together feels like a repetitive machine gun salvo. Rising gas and oil prices are artillery shells destroying the unprotected homes of lower incomes. The higher incomes are safely buried. The machine-gun salvos and grenades bounce off their thick bunkers of money. But using 15% less gas is a different story. Shower less, lower heating, use fewer burners, they feel like exploding scud missiles. With everyone. With the threat that there will be too little gas in the winter because the reserves have not been sufficiently replenished, this seems to feel like the threat of a small tactical nuclear bomb. Suddenly I don’t cycle well at all and I quickly go home to think carefully about my contribution. The rest of the Netherlands should do the same.
