Why hasn’t extraterrestrial life been discovered yet?
Deze vraag is opgeworpen in Scientas 18/5/2022 naar aanleiding van een artikel van Wong en Bartlett over dit onderwerp. De schrijvers geven een mogelijke verklaring namelijk, dat aliens (nog voor we ze kunnen waarnemen) zijn gedoemd om hun beschaving te vernietigen of – in het gunstigste geval – hun expansiedrift op een lager pitje te zetten.
This question was raised in Scientas 5/18/2022 in response to an article by Wong and Bartlett on the subject. The authors offer a possible explanation, namely that aliens (before we can observe them) are doomed to destroy their civilization or – at best – put their expansion drive on the back burner.
Astronomen zijn op zoek naar exoplaneten. Planeten die dezelfde omstandigheden kennen als die op onze aarde. Nieuwsgierig om er achter te komen of daar ook leven is zoals die op aarde is ontwikkeld. Die exoplaneten zijn gevonden; de meeste op onwaarschijnlijk verre afstanden. In het oneindig universum is de kans dat er een oneindig aantal exoplaneten zijn groot. Maar door de oneindigheid is de kans ook groot dat deze op oneindige afstanden van elkaar staan. Mocht daar leven zijn begonnen, dan wil dat niet zeggen, dat zij qua ontwikkeling verder zijn dan wij. In die zin dat zij net zo nieuwsgierig zijn naar exoplaneten én verder zijn in hun ruimtereizen. Misschien is hun planeet geschikt gemaakt om juist daarop te blijven. Of wellicht hebben Wong en Bartlett wel gelijk: het leven op een exoplaneet zal uiteindelijk tot zelfvernietiging leiden.
Astronomers are looking for exoplanets. Planets that have the same conditions as those on our earth. Curious to find out if there is life there as it developed on Earth. Those exoplanets have been found; most at improbably distant distances. In the infinite universe there is a good chance that there are an infinite number of exoplanets. But because of the infinity, there is also a good chance that they are at infinite distances from each other. If life started there, that does not mean that they are further along in development than we are. In the sense that they are just as curious about exoplanets and are further along in their space travel. Perhaps their planet has been made fit to stay there. Or perhaps Wong and Bartlett are right: life on an exoplanet will eventually lead to self-destruction.
Maar dat neemt niet weg, dat er vliegende objecten zijn, die (nog) niet geïdentificeerd zijn. Dus de vraag is niet waarom buitenaards leven zich nog niet heeft gemeld, maar wat de betekenis is van die vliegende objecten. Daar kan het antwoord op de vraag liggen, waarom er nog geen buitenaards leven is ontdekt. NASA heeft onlangs aangekondigd onderzoek te doen naar deze Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP). Dit omdat een botsing met het satellietnetwerk om de aarde heen gespannen de digitale maatschappij in gevaar kan brengen. Heeft wellicht ook iets te maken met het 40jarig jubileum van de film The Extra Terrestrial, beter bekend als ET, uit 1982 …
But that does not alter the fact that there are flying objects that have not (yet) been identified. So the question is not why extraterrestrial life has not yet made an appearance, but what the meaning of those flying objects is. There may lie the answer to the question, why no extraterrestrial life has yet been discovered. NASA recently announced that it is investigating this Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP). This is because a collision with the satellite network around the earth can endanger the digital society. Gekheid, natuurlijk. Voorlopig hou ik het erop, dat afstanden veel te groot zijn en ik geen reden heb te veronderstellen, dat het zoeken naar ander buitenaards leven op het programma staat van onze buitenaardse vrienden.
Madness, of course. For now, I’ll say that distances are far too great and I have no reason to assume that the search for other extraterrestrial life is on the agenda of our extraterrestrial friends.
