Is de oorlog in Oekraïne niet anders dan een signaal, dat er iets drastisch moet veranderen in Nederland? Een relatief kleine oorlog in midden Europa leidt namelijk tot grote gevolgen voor de energie- en voedselhuishouding in de wereld (NRC 3/5/2022 commentaar). Het is lang geleden dat staten gedwongen worden andere geopolitieke standpunten in te nemen onder de dreiging van een nucleaire ramp. Ernstig, dus.
Neen, het lijkt er niet op, dat er een drastische verandering op til is. De nucleaire dreiging lijkt een voetnoot in de oorlog. Mocht de nucleaire ramp uitblijven, dan zal het een kwestie van tijd zijn, dat nieuwe economische en politieke verhoudingen in de wereld ontstaan. Want na corona én straks het einde van de oorlog kan je toch niet dieper gaan? Nu al zie je tekenen van berusting bij de bevolking. Het vliegverkeer neemt weer chaotische vormen aan. Het wordt gewoon weer druk op de weg. Winkelschappen liggen nog steeds vol. Alsof er geen inflatie is. Het nieuws wordt weer gedomineerd door andere nationale besognes dan de oorlog. Business as usual. En dat alles tegen de achtergrond van weer een herdenking op 4 mei.

No, it doesn’t look like a drastic change is on the way. The nuclear threat seems to be a footnote in the war. Should the nuclear disaster fail to materialise, it will be only a matter of time before new economic and political relations emerge in the world. Because after corona and soon the end of the war, you can’t go deeper, can you? You can already see signs of resignation among the population. Air traffic is again taking on chaotic forms. It just gets busy on the road again. Store shelves are still full. As if there is no inflation. The news is again dominated by national concerns other than the war. Business as usual. And all this against the background of another commemoration on May 4.
