A ‘stable’ crypto coin Terra is now collapsing
Is de instorting van de koers van de cryptomunt Terra een voorbode voor nog meer ellende op de financiële markten of is hier sprake van een incidentele koersmanipulatie? In het artikel (NRC vrijdag 13/5/22) wordt in één zin een mogelijke oorzaak genoemd: ‘Short’ gaan op deze cryptomunt na koersmanipulatie. Je kan je afvragen of dit wel mogelijk is, maar er lijkt dus sprake te zijn van een incident. Een incident waar risico zoekende cryptobeleggers niet van wakker moeten liggen, omdat vanwege het incidentele karakter de koers zich normaal gesproken weer zal herstellen. Althans, bij gedekte crypto’s, zoals een ‘stablecoin’. Maar dat wordt anders nu de dekking bestaat uit andere volatiele cryptomunten. Een soort piramidespel. Het hoort allemaal bij een markt, waarin je je kan afvragen waarom in deze gebakken lucht wordt belegd. Het lijkt er wel op, dat beleggers dit piramidespel even willen ontvluchten.
Is the collapse of the price of the crypto coin Terra a harbinger of even more misery in the financial markets or is this an incidental price manipulation? In the article (NRC Friday 13/5/22) a possible cause is mentioned in one sentence: ‘Short’ going on this crypto coin after price manipulation. You may wonder whether this is possible, but there seems to be an incident. An incident that risk-seeking crypto investors should not lose sleep over, because due to the incidental nature, the price will normally recover. At least, with covered cryptos, such as a ‘stablecoin’. But that will change now that the cover consists of other volatile cryptocurrencies. A kind of pyramid scheme. It’s all part of a market, in which you can wonder why people invest in this hot air. It seems that investors want to escape this pyramid scheme for a while.
Zolang de ‘echte’ financiële markten niet worden geraakt, is er niet veel aan de hand. Maar naarmate de markt voor crypto’s binnen de onrustige financiële markten steeds meer verweven raakt als aanvaarde belegging zal een steeds groter deel van die markt uit gebakken lucht bestaan. En het leeglopen daarvan is een voorbode van nog meer ellende op de financiële markten.
As long as the ‘real’ financial markets are not hit, there is not much to worry about. But as the crypto market becomes more and more intertwined as an accepted investment within the troubled financial markets, an increasing part of that market will consist of hot air. And its deflation is a harbinger of even more misery in the financial markets.
