Prachtig toch, die ontwikkeling naar de volgende fase van het internet: de metaverse (NRC 11/10)? Leven binnen een zelf gefantaseerde wereld op internet. Letterlijk: even de werkelijkheid ontvluchten, een momentje voor jezelf. Maar is er geen addertje verscholen onder het digitale gras? Begonnen met wiet van de hippies in de jaren 60 van de vorige eeuw, de LSD trips van de Beatles, de heroĂŻne shots van de junkies in Rotterdam, de cocaĂŻne snuivers aan de Amsterdamse Zuidas tot aan de extacy, crystal meth etc. pillen slikkende feestbeesten toe. Allen verslaafd aan het ontvluchten van de werkelijkheid. Allen op zoek naar die ‘rush’. Metaverse zal net zo verslavend werken. De echte wereld is psychisch onleefbaar, te complex geworden. Dan is een zelf gecreĂ«erde wereld op internet de oplossing. Maar nu goedkoop en voor letterlijk de hele wereld bereikbaar. Zoals het in de film Avatar duidelijk wordt, zelfs een permanente oplossing. De geboorte van een parallelle wereld.
Wonderful, isn’t it, that development to the next phase of the internet: the metaverse (NRC 11/10)? Living in a self-imagined world on the internet. Literally: escape reality for a while, a moment for yourself. But isn’t there a catch hidden under the digital grass? Starting with weed from the hippies in the 1960s, the LSD trips of the Beatles, the heroin shots of the junkies in Rotterdam, the cocaine sniffers at the Amsterdam Zuidas until the ecstasy, crystal meth etc. pill-swallowing party animals to. All addicted to escaping reality. All looking for that ‘rush’. Metaverse will be just as addictive. The real world has become psychologically unlivable, too complex. Then a self-created world on the internet is the solution. But now cheap and accessible to literally the whole world. As it becomes clear in the movie Avatar, even a permanent solution. The birth of a parallel world.
Zoals zo vaak de vraag bij techniek: moeten we dit willen, omdat het kan? Ook nu weer geen relevante vraag; de autonome ontwikkeling van techniek is niet te stoppen.
As so often the question with technology: should we want this, because it is possible? Again not a relevant question; the autonomous development of technology is unstoppable.
