Trial by media. Do camera images now provide a complete picture of police brutality?

Christiaan Weijts beschrijft in zijn column (NRC 5/11) over het woonprotest in Rotterdam een steeds heftiger ontwikkeling in de publieke ruimte namelijk ‘trial by media’. Het gaat daarbij om het politieoptreden. Zoals Weijts terloops terecht opmerkt, zijn politiemensen ook gewone mensen. De afgelopen jaren als kop-van-jut te zijn behandeld – voor een deel wellicht terecht – heeft een grens bereikt. Het publiek is voor haar oordeel heel vatbaar voor bewegende beelden op social media. Politie drones voorzien nu ook daarin. Weijts geeft aan, dat hij de beelden van politie én demonstranten niet vertrouwt om te kunnen zeggen wie schuldig is aan het geweld. Hij slaat de spijker op zijn kop. Dat is nu precies wat de politie wil zeggen met haar actie. Zeker niet om zichzelf vrij te pleiten. Maar om duidelijk te maken, dat camerabeelden op sociale media niet altijd het volledige beeld geven. Met deze ‘trial by media’ moet je dus ophouden. Dat er harde klappen zijn gevallen is wel duidelijk. Onderzoek later zal wel uitmaken wie schuldig is. Je hoeft overigens echt niet van de politie te houden. Maar respect zal wel respect oogsten. Juist omdat de gewone politieman ook lijdt onder de woningcrisis.

Police drones now also provide this. Weijts indicates that he does not trust the images of the police and demonstrators to be able to say who is guilty of the violence. He hits the nail on the head. That is exactly what the police want to say with their action. Certainly not to exonerate oneself. But to make it clear that camera images on social media do not always give the full picture. So you have to stop with this trial by media. It is clear that there have been hard blows. Investigation later will determine who is to blame. You really don’t have to like the police. But respect will earn respect. Precisely because the ordinary policeman also suffers from the housing crisis.
