Diversity portal m/f. Now a missed opportunity?
“Beste reizigers” zo begint het omroepbericht van de NS. Een genderneutrale benadering. Een blijk van het streven naar een inclusieve maatschappij. Anders dan bij de introductie, gaat het omroepbericht niet meer gepaard met commotie. Een gewenning. Een genderneutraal Nederland, dat streeft de overheid na. Speciale aandacht daarvoor dan ook in de begroting 2023 richting de lhbtiq+ regenboog gemeenschap.

“Dear travelers” is how the broadcast message from the NS begins. A gender neutral approach. A sign of striving for an inclusive society. Unlike the introduction, the announcement is no longer accompanied by commotion. A habit. A gender-neutral Netherlands is what the government is striving for. Special attention to this in the 2023 budget towards the lhbtiq+ rainbow community.
Gewenning, daar gaat het om. Daarom natuurlijk ook het diversiteitsportaal van de SER (NRC 1/2/23 Geen vrouw in top? Slechte score). Als uitloper van een wet vanaf 1/1/22 om de man/vrouw verhouding in topposities in balans te krijgen. Maar de benaming man/vrouw was juist een reden voor de NS om de ‘reiziger’ te introduceren. Alleszins gerechtvaardigd, maar deze impuls om specifiek de vrouw naar voren te schuiven en de lhbtiq+ gemeenschap niet te noemen doet geen recht aan de recente emancipatoire ontwikkelingen van de regenboog gemeenschap. Het kan niet anders, dan dat die gemeenschap zich teruggeworpen in de tijd voelt. Sterker, rechtszaken over gelijke behandeling liggen in het verschiet. Je hoeft het niet met deze ontwikkelingen eens te zijn (velen gruwelen ervan), maar als je toch een emancipatie impuls wilt geven, dan zou dit het moment moeten zijn om het diversiteitsportaal genderneutraal te maken, juist om de maatschappij eraan te laten wennen.

It is inevitable that the community feels thrown back in time. In fact, lawsuits about equal treatment are in the offing. You don’t have to agree with these developments (many abhor them), but if you still want to give an emancipation impulse, then this should be the time to make the diversity portal gender neutral, precisely to get society used to it.
