Dit zijn de inleidende woorden van Eva Jinek bij de aankondiging van het podiumoptreden van Alexander Klöpping in haar uitzending van 22/5/25 over een mogelijke dystopische, door Kunstmatige Intelligentie (Artificial Intelligence, AI) gestuurde wereld, die in de komende 5 jaar zal plaatsvinden. Een wereld beschreven door techondernemers. Met als middelpunt de strijd om de beste AI tussen Amerika en China. Met als kampioensbokaal de economische en geopolitiek macht. Het jaarverslag 2024 van de AIVD maakt duidelijk, dat wat China betreft het geen grap is.
Andere staten, zoals Nederland, lijken een bijrol te spelen. Sterker, zij zullen afhankelijk worden van deze spelers en in de marge verdwijnen. Een dystopie, tenzij we als maatschappij nu op de pauzeknop drukken en eens goed nadenken waar we met AI naar toe willen. Waar die pauzeknop is en wie er op moet/mag drukken, Joost mag het weten.
Dan komt het rapport van de SER, vandaag uitgebracht, net op tijd. Maar het rapport richt zich op de (mogelijke tweedeling op de) arbeidsmarkt in Nederland, waardoor ogenschijnlijk de ontwikkeling van AI in het buitenland voor lief wordt genomen en daardoor dus ook het verhaal van de techondernemers, verteld door Alexander Klöpping.

Waar ik als scifi adept bang voor ben – ja, bang – is, dat de sciencefiction schrijvers en filmmakers de wereld al veel langer een spiegel hebben voorgezet, waarin AI leidt tot een Apocalyps voor de mens. Films als The Terminator en The Matrix laten zien, dat AI een gevaar is. Maar mogelijk is het een fase in de ontwikkeling van de mens, waar AI een nieuwe levensvorm is en een plaats vraagt in een vreedzame samenleving. Die filosofische invalshoek is te zien in de films I, Robot en Ex Machina.

These are the introductory words of Eva Jinek when announcing Alexander Klöpping’s stage appearance in her broadcast of 22/5/25 about a possible dystopian world driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), which will take place in the next 5 years. A world described by tech entrepreneurs. With the battle for the best AI between America and China as its centerpiece. With the economic and geopolitical power as the championship trophy. The AIVD’s 2024 annual report makes it clear that as far as China is concerned, this is no joke.
Other states, such as the Netherlands, seem to play a supporting role. In fact, they will become dependent on these players and disappear into the margins. A dystopia, unless we as a society press the pause button now and think carefully about where we want to go with AI. Where that pause button is and who should/may press it, who knows.
Then the SER report, published today, comes just in time.
But the report focuses on the (possible division in the) labor market in the Netherlands, which apparently means that the development of AI abroad is taken for granted and therefore also the story of the tech entrepreneurs, told by Alexander Klöpping.
What I fear as a sci-fi adept – yes, fear – is that science fiction writers and filmmakers have long held up a mirror to the world, in which AI leads to an apocalypse for mankind. Films like The Terminator and The Matrix show that AI is a danger. But it may be a phase in human development, where AI is a new life form and demands a place in a peaceful society. This philosophical approach can be seen in the films I, Robot and Ex Machina.
It is possible that the imagination in Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek of a cosmic society “where no one has gone before” is the future that humanity is moving towards hand in hand with AI.
