Ik vraag mij af of we niet te ver gaan met elkaar de maat te nemen. Wijnaldum neemt de wijk naar een onooglijk voetbalteam in Saudie-Arabië tegen waarschijnlijk een ruime vergoeding (NRC 19/3/24). Hij doet Nederland even aan voor wat Interlands en moet meteen bij de pers verantwoording afleggen, waarom deze kennelijk maatschappelijk bewogen voetballer een mensenrechtenschendend land als werkgever zoekt. Daar lijkt een afkeuring in te zitten Zijn reactie: hij heeft het daar gewoon leuk. Heeft het gevolgen? Neen, natuurlijk niet. Net zoals de mensenrechtende schending van asielzoekers in Nederland geen gevolgen heeft. Ook het blijven afnemen van LNG van mensenrechtenschendende landen, zoals de VS heeft geen gevolgen. Maar ook de aanstaande verhuizing van hun hoofdkantoor naar het mensenrechtenschendende Midden-Oosten zal voor grote bedrijven zonder gevolgen blijven. Laten we gewoon genieten van een overwinning van Oranje en elkaar niet de maat nemen.
I wonder if we’re not going too far in measuring each other up. Wijnaldum is moving to an unsightly football team in Saudi Arabia for probably a generous compensation (NRC 19/3/24). He visits the Netherlands for some international matches and immediately has to explain to the press why this apparently socially committed footballer is looking for a human rights-violating country as an employer. There seems to be some disapproval in that. His response: he’s just having fun there. Does it have consequences? No, of course not. Just as the human rights violation of asylum seekers in the Netherlands has no consequences. Continuing to purchase LNG from human rights violating countries such as the US also has no consequences. But the upcoming move of their headquarters to the human rights-violating Middle East will also have no consequences for large companies. Let’s just enjoy a victory for the Dutch team and not judge each other.
