Are we ready to call New Zealand ‘Aotearoa’ now?
Zijn we bereid om Nieuw-Zeeland ‘Aotearoa’ te noemen, de oorspronkelijke Maori-naam? Kunstenaar Hohepa Thompson, alias Hori, reisde speciaal naar Zeeland om deze vraag te stellen. Marjolein Pagee doet daar verslag over (NRC 11/8/2022). Het wordt niet duidelijk waarom Hori Nederland aandoet en de vraag stelt door overal posters met die vraag te plakken, anders dan dat zijn eiland ooit eens als kolonie door de VOC is vernoemd naar de provincie Zeeland. Mogelijk om goodwill te kweken voor zijn politieke strijd in zijn thuisland. Pagee eindigt plots met de absurde stelling, dat Aotearoa een actueel bezet land is en Nieuw-Zeeland een koloniale naam zoals Nederlands-Indië een koloniale naam was. Nieuw Zeeland is een zelfstandig, democratisch land met een koloniaal verleden, waar de bevolking haar eigen toekomst kiest. Zij bepalen of zij terug willen keren naar de naam van haar oorspronkelijke bewoners, Aotearoa. Niet Nederland, hoewel ooit kolonisator. Daarbij is Nederlands-Indië de eerste naam van de ‘gordel van smaragd’. Zij had geen voorganger met verwijzing naar de oorspronkelijke bewoners. Deze vergelijking loopt daarom mank en verstoort het op zich sympathieke verhaal van Hori. In de moeizame verwerking van het koloniaal verleden van Nederland gooit Marjolein Pagee onnodig olie op het vuur.

Marjolein Pagee reports on this (NRC 11/8/2022). It is not clear why Hori visits the Netherlands and asks the question by sticking posters everywhere with that question, other than that his island was once named as a colony by the VOC after the province of Zeeland. Possibly to cultivate goodwill for his political struggles in his homeland. Pagee suddenly ends with the absurd statement that Aotearoa is a currently occupied country and New Zealand a colonial name, just like the Dutch East Indies was a colonial name. New Zealand is an independent, democratic country with a colonial past, where the population chooses its own future. They decide whether they want to return to the name of its original inhabitants, Aotearoa. Not the Netherlands, although once a colonizer. In addition, the Dutch East Indies is the first name of the ‘belt of emerald’. She had no pastor with reference to the original inhabitants. This comparison is therefore flawed and distorts Hori’s sympathetic story. In the difficult processing of the colonial past of the Netherlands, Marjolein Pagee unnecessarily throws oil on the fire.
