Wages now not compensating for inflation
Inflatiecompensatie zal elke werknemer (en hoe zit het met de gepensioneerden?) nodig vinden. In feite zegt de werknemer tegen de baas: mijn inkoopkosten voor mijn prestatie zijn gestegen. De prijs die ik jou reken gaat daarom omhoog. DNB geeft een logische waarschuwing mee, dat daardoor de inflatie niet zal afnemen (NRC 17/8/22 DNB waarschuwt: niet te veel compenseren voor koopkrachtverlies). Eigenlijk een waarschuwing voor een niet te stuiten loon/prijsspiraal met een mogelijke krimp zoals in de jaren 70/80 uit de vorige eeuw. Die krimp zit er in de staart van dit jaar sowieso aan te komen. De remedie daartegen is de lonen als kostenpost dan drastisch te verlagen. Maar daar zijn de vakbonden niet voor te porren. De bedrijven in Coronatijd die dat wilden doen, konden op frisse tegenwind rekenen. Werknemers kunnen het in de Coronatijd door staatssteun gespaarde geld nu uitgeven, wat de economie in het tweede kwartaal met 2,6% deed groeien. Eigenlijk laat de werknemer zien nog voldoende geld in kas te hebben om onbezorgd de inflatie te voeden. Daarbij opgeteld, dat de lonen nooit naar beneden worden bijgesteld, dan is het economische zelfmoord van de werkgever om zijn personeel voor de inflatie te compenseren. Niet doen dus. Beter is het te luisteren naar een oud Hollands spreekwoord: zuinigheid met vlijt, bouwt huizen als kastelen.
Inflation compensation will be necessary for every worker (and what about retirees?). In effect, the employee is saying to the boss: My purchasing costs for my performance have increased. The price I charge you will therefore go up. DNB issues a logical warning that inflation will not decrease as a result (NRC 17/8/22 DNB warns: do not compensate too much for loss of purchasing power). Actually a warning for an unstoppable wage/price spiral with a possible contraction as in the 1970s/1980s. That contraction is in the tail of this year in any case coming. The remedy for this is to drastically reduce wages as a cost item. But that’s not what the unions are for. The companies in Corona time that wanted to do that could count on fresh headwinds. Workers can now spend the money saved by state aid during the Corona time, which caused the economy to grow by 2.6% in the second quarter. In fact, the employee shows that he still has enough cash in hand to feed inflation without any worries. Added to this that wages are never adjusted downwards, then it is economic suicide for the employer to compensate his staff for inflation. So don’t. It is better to listen to an old Dutch proverb: thrift with diligence, builds houses like castles.
