Louise Fresco (NRC 31/10/21) wijst erop, dat “drastische ruimtelijke veranderingen, in landschap, verstedelijking en landbouw niet iets van deze eeuw zijn”. En “in plaats van te roepen dat het (bijna) te laat is, moeten we de schouders eronder zetten en beginnen aan een fantastische transformatie”. Mooi gezegd. Zeer aanstekelijk, toch? Maar wie zijn dan die “we”, die de schouders eronder moeten zetten? Louise Fresco beschrijft de veranderingen in de ruimtelijke ordening door klimaatverandering als een voortdurende beweging, die ertoe leidt, dat het allemaal weer goed zal komen. Ja, voor de aarde. Die past zich ecologisch gezien wel aan. Maar komt het goed met de bewoners van Nederland? Zijn alle Nederlanders wel bereid om daarvoor de schouders eronder te zetten? Het lijkt er niet op, nu volgens een recente enquête Nederlanders over het effect van klimaatverandering verschillend denken. Zes op de tien vrezen voor de gevolgen van klimaatverandering voor Nederland. Positief, toch? Maar nog steeds vier op de tien blijven gewoon dansen op de vulkaan.
Louise Fresco (NRC 31/10/21) points out that “drastic spatial changes in landscape, urbanization and agriculture are not something of this century”. And “instead of shouting that it is (almost) too late, we should put our shoulders to the wheel and start a fantastic transformation”. Well said. Very catchy, right? But who are those “we”, who have to put their shoulders to the wheel? Louise Fresco describes the changes in spatial planning as a result of climate change as a continuous movement, leading to things being all right again. Yes, for the earth. It adapts ecologically. But will the residents of the Netherlands be okay? Are all Dutch people willing to put their shoulders to the wheel for this? It does not seem so, now that, according to a recent survey, the Dutch think differently about the effect of climate change. Six in ten fear the consequences of climate change for the Netherlands. Positive, right? But still four out of ten just keep dancing on the volcano.
Ondanks de beschuldigende vinger van het IPCC, dat de mens de opwarming veroorzaakt. Maar dat diezelfde mens het probleem ook kan oplossen. Samen.
De opmaat naar de vulkaanuitbarsting zijn de lopende crises (covid/woning/vluchteling/Groningen), waarin de Nederlandse samenleving laat zien er slecht mee om te kunnen gaan. Laat staan met die ‘fantastische transformatie’ van Louise Fresco. Samen moeten ‘we’ de schouders eronder zetten. Maar ik ben bang, dat ‘we’ dit niet samen doen.
Het is voor een gewone Nederlander ook niet te bevatten, dat een groot deel van de bevolking van Nederland spoedig niet meer zal passen op dit stukje aarde. Het is toch nog steeds een ver-van-mijn-bedshow op wat recent heftig wateroverlast in het zuiden na. Het helpt ook niet als naderende ‘tipping points’ (onomkeerbare ecologische veranderingen) wetenschappelijk worden weerlegd.

It is also incomprehensible to an ordinary Dutch person that a large part of the population of the Netherlands will soon no longer fit on this piece of earth. It is still a far-from-my-bed show after all, except for some recent heavy flooding in the south. It also doesn’t help if impending ’tipping points’ (irreversible ecological changes) are scientifically disproved.

Mocht Glasgow geen concrete stappen opleveren, dan wordt het nietige Nederland teruggeworpen op haar eigen klimaatambities. En zonder buitenland zullen die vier op de tien zeker niet stoppen met dansen op de vulkaan.
If Glasgow does not deliver concrete steps, the tiny Netherlands will be thrown back on its own climate ambitions. And without foreign countries, those four in ten will certainly not stop dancing on the volcano.
