Pim Fortuyn then and globalization now
Door neoliberale economie en politiek, met hulp van technische en technologische ontwikkelingen zoals internet, zijn staten met elkaar vervlochten. De toename van welvaart en toegankelijkheid van medische zorg hebben de wereldbevolking doen groeien tot 7 miljard. Leiders van de wereld hebben zich verenigd voor een betere wereld. De aarde is een groot dorp geworden. Globalisering lijkt per saldo een win-win situatie te zijn. Nog niet voor iedereen, maar toch. De richting is goed, lijkt het. Maar het is schone schijn. Dat is wat ik moest denken toen ik het artikel van Sjoerd de Jong (NRC 06/05/22) las over de herdenking van de moord op Pim Fortuyn 20 jaar geleden.
Neoliberal economics and politics, with the help of technical and technological developments such as the Internet, have intertwined states. The increase in prosperity and accessibility of medical care has caused the world population to grow to 7 billion. Leaders of the world have united for a better world. The earth has become a big village. Globalization appears to be a win-win situation on balance. Not for everyone yet, but still. The direction is right, it seems. But it is clean appearance. That’s what I had to think when I read the article by Sjoerd de Jong (NRC 06/05/22) about the commemoration of the murder of Pim Fortuyn 20 years ago.
Al jaren roepen wetenschappers, dat de aarde de grote ecologische voetafdruk van de mens niet aankan. De groeiende economische macht (lees: van multinationals en vermogenden) en ook daardoor politieke macht (lees: van autocraten en technologiebedrijven) ligt bij een klein percentage van de wereldbevolking. Welvaartsgroei op wereldniveau gaat gepaard met dodelijke schokken zoals door achtereenvolgende wereldoorlogen. Niet alleen door de oorlog in Oekraïne blijkt de verwevenheid van de naties ook een chantabele afhankelijkheid bloot te leggen. De voortgaande globalisering is geen win-win situatie. Een ongemakkelijke conclusie. Het is als een olietanker op ramkoers. Zou de anti Europeaan Pim deze koers hebben willen én kunnen wijzigen?
For years, scientists have been saying that the earth cannot handle the large ecological footprint of humans. The growing economic power (read: of multinationals and the wealthy) and therefore political power (read: of autocrats and technology companies) lies with a small percentage of the world’s population. Global prosperity is accompanied by deadly shocks such as successive world wars. Not only because of the war in Ukraine does the intertwining of the nations also reveal a blackmailable dependence. Ongoing globalization is not a win-win situation. An inconvenient conclusion. It’s like an oil tanker on a collision course. Would the anti-European Pim want and be able to change this course?
