Het NRC van 5/4/22 heeft met een grote kop op de voorpagina de aanbeveling in het laatste rapport van het IPCC kort en krachtig samengevat: uitstoot CO2 moet direct omlaag. Dit om in 2050 de opwarming te beperken tot 1,5 °C. Bij voortgezet beleid stevent de aarde af op een 3 graden temperatuurstijging aan het eind van deze eeuw. Met alle ellende van dien voor het leefklimaat van ons nageslacht.
Een ernstige waarschuwing, die al het andere nieuws opzij zou moeten zetten. Maar het NRC van de volgende dag, 6/4/22, en alle andere internationale kranten openden niet met de kop: regering beëindigt per direct het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen. Waarom niet? Omdat het idee niet is te bevatten.
With a large headline on the front page, the NRC of 5/4/22 summarized the recommendation in the latest IPCC report in a nutshell: CO2 emissions must be reduced immediately. This is to limit global warming to 1.5°C by 2050. With continued policy, the earth is heading for a 3 degree temperature increase by the end of this century. With all the misery that entails for the living environment of our descendants.
A serious warning, which should set all other news aside. But the next day’s NRC, 6/4/22, and all the other international newspapers didn’t open with the headline: Government will immediately end the use of fossil fuels. Why not? Because the idea is incomprehensible.
Om de blinddoek nog even voor de ogen te houden pleit het feit, dat de cijfers, waarop het IPCC haar inschatting maakt, gaan t/m 2019 net voor de inslag van de corona pandemie. Na 2 jaar lockdowns heeft de economische bedrijvigheid een bodem bereikt en hopelijk ook de CO2 uitstoot. Echter, hoewel het IPCC in 2021 al de noodklok luidde, is de inhaalvraag na de pandemie in de economie zo groot, dat daarmee wellicht ook de CO2 uitstoot weer door het dak gaat. Meer dan 7 miljard mensen rennen als lemmingen richting 31/12/2049. Na die dag moet de CO2 uitstoot per saldo nihil zijn. Het moordende water klotst dan tegen je achtertuin en de verzengende hitte dreigt het dak te verkruimelen.

Maar zoals een deus ex machina verschijnt daar de oorlog in Oekraïne. Het is verschrikkelijk wat daar gebeurt, maar nuchter beschouwd zou dit weleens het begin van de redding van de mens kunnen betekenen. Wat onvoorstelbaar is gebeurt namelijk: de agressor, een van de grootste leveranciers van fossiele brandstoffen wordt op een zijspoor gezet. De wereld staat op een tweesprong. Of met de moed der wanhoop elders proberen fossiele brandstoffen te vergaren of gehoor te geven aan de oproep van het IPCC. Kies voor het laatste en draai de knop om. Dwing de bevolking direct een standpunt in te nemen. Dat doet de maatschappij veel pijn, maar leiderschap is ook tegen de stroom in roeien en pijnlijke keuzes maken voor het groter goed, het voortbestaan van de mens. Doe iets! Verplicht meer. Plemp de Noordzee vol met windmolens, verplicht iedereen zonnepanelen op het dak te nemen of warmtepompen te nemen. Verbiedt koken op gas. Voer autoloze dagen in. Biedt daarbij ruime financiële hulp, tijdens de pandemie kon dat ook. Laat de multinationals daartoe direct hun ‘fair share ‘afdragen op wereld niveau. Ook al biedt een enkel land weerstand. Vergeet dan ook niet om daarin mee te nemen alle ‘end-of-pipe’ oplossingen, noodgrepen, zoals de relatief goedkope wereldwijde inzet van de CO2 slurpende grondstof olivijn. Alle beetjes helpen. Maar doe onmiddellijk iets om duidelijk te maken dat het menens is.
But like a deus ex machina, the war in Ukraine appears there. It is terrible what is happening there, but in sobriety this could mean the beginning of the salvation of mankind. What is unimaginable happens: the aggressor, one of the largest suppliers of fossil fuels, is sidetracked. The world is at a crossroads. Or with the courage of desperation try elsewhere to collect fossil fuels or heed the call of the IPCC. Choose the latter and turn the knob. Force the population to take a stand immediately. That hurts society a lot, but leadership also means rowing against the tide and making painful choices for the greater good, the survival of humans. Do something! Mandatory more. Fill the North Sea with windmills, oblige everyone to install solar panels on the roof or use heat pumps. Prohibits cooking on gas. Enter car-free days. Offers ample financial assistance, which was also possible during the pandemic. To this end, have the multinationals immediately hand over their ‘fair share’ on a global level. Even if a single country resists. Do not forget to include all ‘end-of-pipe’ solutions, emergency measures, such as the relatively cheap worldwide use of the CO2 guzzling raw material olivine. Every little bit helps. But do something immediately to show that you mean business.
