Woke needs support
De prominente socioloog Musa al-Gharbi zegt iets opmerkelijks over de anti-wokebeweging (NRC 1/2/25 Het is zover: ‘antiwoke’ heeft ‘woke’ volledig in de tang). Deze beweging zou nog het meest lijken op wat ze het hardst aanvalt: de wokebeweging. De anti-wokebeweging zou spreken in termen van “existentiële strijd” en “het enorme historische belang van hun missie”, terwijl het grote gevaar waar ze voor waarschuwen er in de praktijk niet is.
Suggereert Al-Gharbi hiermee dat de woke-beweging ook strijdt tegen een onrechtvaardigheid die er niet is? Dat zou een ernstige vergissing zijn.
Sterker nog, hij bagatelliseert de anti-wokebeweging op een manier die het vuur juist aanwakkert. De geschiedenis laat zien hoe moeilijk het is om diepgewortelde sociale normen en machtsstructuren te doorbreken. Zulke structuren bevoordelen vaak de sterksten en gaan gepaard met ongelijkheid. Bestrijding ervan vergt een langdurig bewustwordingsproces, soms geleidelijk, soms explosief. Immers, het is nog niet zo lang geleden dat de grondrechten van het individu in de Grondwet zijn vastgelegd. Toch blijven restanten van dat denken onderhuids sudderen. Het is een slingerbeweging, zoals de opkomst van Donald Trump in Amerika laat zien. De olie op het conservatieve anti-wokevuur die Bianca Censori met haar catwalkoptreden tijdens de Grammy’s heeft gegooid, zal dat proces niet helpen. Ook dichter bij huis zal het onderzoek van het OM naar vermeende discriminatie in een vacaturetekst van Ongehoord Nederland – omdat de omroep geen ‘x’ zoekt, maar een man of een vrouw – de anti-woke gemoederen hoog doen oplaaien.
Sociale rechtvaardigheid is essentieel voor een vreedzame samenleving. Maar verandering moet draagvlak houden. Als het te snel gaat en als dwang voelt, roept het weerstand op – en slaat de slinger terug.

The anti-woke movement would speak in terms of “existential struggle” and “the enormous historical importance of their mission”, while in practice the great danger they warn about does not exist.
Is Al-Gharbi suggesting that the woke movement is also fighting against an injustice that does not exist? That would be a serious mistake.
In fact, he downplays the anti-woke movement in a way that actually fuels the fire. History shows how difficult it is to break deeply entrenched social norms and power structures. Such structures often favor the strongest and are associated with inequality. Combating it requires a long-term awareness process, sometimes gradual, sometimes explosive. After all, it was not so long ago that the fundamental rights of the individual were enshrined in the Constitution. Yet remnants of that thinking continue to simmer beneath the surface. It is a pendulum swing, as the rise of Donald Trump in America shows. The fuel on the conservative anti-woke fire that Bianca Censori has thrown with her catwalk performance at the Grammys will not help that process. Also closer to home, the Public Prosecution Service’s investigation into alleged discrimination in a vacancy text from Ongehoord Nederland – because the broadcaster is not looking for an ‘x’, but a man or a woman – will inflame anti-woke emotions.
Social justice is essential for a peaceful society. But change must maintain support. If it goes too fast and feels like coercion, it creates resistance – and the pendulum swings back.
