De Doomsday Clock is een ontwerp dat het publiek waarschuwt over hoe dicht we bij de vernietiging van onze wereld zijn met gevaarlijke, door ons zelf gemaakte technologieën. Het is een metafoor, een herinnering aan de gevaren die we moeten aanpakken als we willen overleven op de planeet.

Toen de Doomsday Clock in 1947 werd gecreëerd, kwam het grootste gevaar voor de mensheid uit kernwapens, met name uit het vooruitzicht dat de Verenigde Staten en de Sovjet-Unie op weg waren naar een nucleaire wapenwedloop. Het Bulletin hield voor het eerst in 2007 rekening met mogelijke catastrofale verstoringen door klimaatverandering in zijn hand-setting beraadslagingen.

The Doomsday Clock is a design that warns the public about how close we are to destroying our world with dangerous technologies of our own making. It is a metaphor, a reminder of the perils we must address if we are to survive on the planet.

When the Doomsday Clock was created in 1947, the greatest danger to humanity came from nuclear weapons, in particular from the prospect that the United States and the Soviet Union were headed for a nuclear arms race. The Bulletin considered possible catastrophic disruptions from climate change in its hand-setting deliberations for the first time in 2007.
