Met regelmaat gooit een gezagsdrager de knuppel in het hoenderhok alsof de Nederlandse samenleving al niet genoeg in brand staat. De landelijk coördinator voor de bestrijding van racisme en discriminatie binnen de politie is van mening, dat de uniformiteit van de politie in de huidige superdiverse en sterk polariserende samenleving in de ogen van veel groepen niet neutraal is en een exponent van overheidsgezag dat veel minder wordt geaccepteerd. Versterking van neutraliteit van de politie is juist in deze tijd essentieel (NRC 1/11/22 Agent met hoofddoek moet kunnen). Zegt de coördinator. Daarom pleit hij ervoor de hijab en andere draagbare uitingen van religie bij het dragen van het politie uniform toe te staan. Welk bewijs hij hiervoor aandraagt voor deze innerlijk tegenstrijdige stelling is niet bekend. Maar het blijkt voor de coördinator met name te gaan om de instroom van moslima’s (met hijab) naar het politiewerk op straat te bevorderen, niet of minder om de burger op straat het vertrouwen te geven, dat de politie niet bevooroordeeld te werk gaat. Laat hij dat dan ook duidelijk zeggen. Dat de moslima met hijab haar werk als politie agent goed zal doen is niet het punt. Maar in een “superdiverse en sterk polariserende samenleving” en niet te vergeten op visualisatie gericht, wordt elk afwijkend beeld gebruikt om het eigen gelijk te bekrachtigen. De tijd is juist helemaal niet rijp voor hijabs als onderdeel van het politie uniform op straat. Stel je voor, dat een moslima met hijab als politieagent zich moet mengen tussen Iraanse vrouwen op de Dam, demonstrerend tegen de verplichte hoofddoek in hun land. Op z’n zachts gezegd is zij volstrekt ongeloofwaardig en in het uiterste geval gooit zij olie op het vuur.

What evidence he provides for this internally contradictory statement is not known. But for the coordinator it appears to be mainly about promoting the influx of Muslim women (with hijab) into police work on the street, not or less to give citizens on the street the confidence that the police do not act in a prejudiced way. Let him say that clearly. That the Muslim woman with hijab will do her job as a police officer well is not the point. But in a “super diverse and highly polarizing society”, not to mention focused on visualization, every deviant image is used to reinforce one’s own right. The time is just not right at all for hijabs as part of the police uniform on the street. Imagine that a Muslim woman wearing a hijab as a police officer has to mingle with Iranian women on Dam Square, demonstrating against the mandatory headscarf in their country. To put it mildly, she is completely unbelievable and in the worst case, she throws oil on the fire.
