Doemscenario’s over AI (artificial intelligence) zijn veelal ongefundeerd, schrijven Corien Prins en Haroon Sheikh. Terwijl er wel degelijk reële risico’s aan kleven. Maak burgers daar bewust van (NRC 14/4/23). Zij verwijzen nogmaals naar het eerder uitgebrachte – door hun opgemaakte – WRR rapport uit 2021. Een moratorium van 6 maanden op wereldschaal op de ontwikkeling van AI zien zij niet zitten. Terecht natuurlijk. Alsof de nieuwsgierigheid van de wetenschap plots stilstaat. Een goed voorbeeld is klonen. Verboden, maar niet in alle landen. En dan is daarvoor nog een lab nodig. Voor AI per definitie niet. Maar de geruststelling die uit het artikel van Prins en Sheikh lijkt te spreken, kan niet verbergen, dat de ontwikkeling ons voorstellingsvermogen te boven gaat. Een groot verschil met de voorgaande 3 industriële revoluties is, dat in deze 4e revolutie mogelijk de techniek de mens de baas wordt.

Afgezien van het feit, dat Goldman Sachs op wereldschaal een verlies van 300 mln banen voorziet, is dit op micro niveau natuurlijk rampzalig. Op welke tijdschaal ontstaan er nieuwe banen? En zijn alle mensen intellectueel in staat kwalitatief nog hogere functies te vervullen? Wat zegt dit over de al aanwezige vermogens tweedeling in de maatschappij? Voor velen is dit nog maar een sciencefiction verhaal, een ver-van-mijn-bedshow. Op micro niveau hebben mensen hun eigen sores om de dag door te komen. Dus veel kunnen de burgers er niet bij hebben. Maar het internationaal signaal voor een moratorium op AI zegt wel wat over de urgentie. Het is te hopen, dat het verhaal van Prins en Sheikh niet net zo geruststellend is als die van Chamberlain vlak voor het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

As if the curiosity of science suddenly stops. A good example is cloning. Banned, but not in all countries. And then a lab is needed for that. Not for AI by definition. But the reassurance that seems to emanate from the article by Prince and Sheikh cannot hide the fact that the development is beyond our imagination. Apart from the fact that Goldman Sachs foresees a loss of 300 million jobs on a global scale, this is of course disastrous on a micro level. On what time scale are new jobs created? And are all people intellectually capable of fulfilling even higher quality functions? What does this say about the wealth divide already present in society? For many, this is just a science fiction story, a far-from-my-bed show. On a micro level, people have their own struggles to get through the day. So the citizens can’t take much. But the international signal for a moratorium on AI does say something about the urgency. It is to be hoped that Prince and Sheikh’s story is not as reassuring as Chamberlain’s just before the outbreak of World War II.
