“I’m not afraid of death, but I’m in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do firstâ (Stephen Hawking).
Gehoord de adviezen was steevast zijn aanstekelijke oproep: “Make it so!”.
As an ardent “Trekkie,” I felt the passing of Captain Jean-Luc Picard as the loss of a close friend. In his obituary (NRC, Oct 30, 2026: “Patrick Stewart: The British actor who made a French Star Trek captain iconic”), the late actor Patrick Stewartâwho played Picardâis described as a versatile performer; yet, it was specifically through the character of Picard that he embodied a charismatic model for fostering connection within a future world. For this reason, I felt it was a betrayal when Stewart portrayed anâadmittedly excellentâvillain in *Conspiracy Theory*. Trekkies (fans of the philosophy of Gene Roddenberry as depicted in the *Star Trek* sci-fi franchise) will immediately grasp this, while those on the outside might simply shrug with a pitying smile.
Although he is a fictional character, I have great admiration for Captain Picardâs leadership styleâa true model for “connective leadership” in the real world; a book has even been written on the subject. When presented with advice or suggestions, his signature, infectious response was always: “Make it so!”
Things will never be the same again when I appear at the annual Comic-Con convention wearing the uniform of the legendary Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
