Restore the court jester now at the Correspondent’s Dinner
Het is goed, dat het Correspondent’s Dinner niet is voortgezet (NRC 26/4/26). Vooral ook omdat het niet zeker is, dat de ‘lone wolf’ schutter alleen opereerde (NRC 26/4/26). Maar ook omdat een stand-up comedian met kritiek op de zittende macht ontbreekt.
De hofnar was in vroegere tijden de enige die een staatshoofd, zoals Lodewijk de XIV, de Zonnekoning, ongezouten de waarheid kon vertellen zonder letterlijk zijn hoofd te verliezen. Het staatshoofd toonde zijn volk daarmee, dat hij best wel wil luisteren naar kritiek en dat hij kwetsbaar wil zijn. Overigens geeft de Amerikaanse bevolking aan met ‘No Kings’ historisch besef te hebben. Deze hofnar – de gevreesde, kritische stand-up comedian – is de mond gesnoerd op het Correspondent’s Dinner, waardoor een belangrijke pilaar van de Amerikaanse democratie, de ‘freedom of speech’, ontbreekt.
De gemiste kans om het beeld van hem als niet democratische president op te poetsen krijgt de president opnieuw aangeboden. Als hij de kans niet met beide handen grijpt om de hofnar in ere te herstellen, dan zal hij hiervoor de rekening gepresenteerd krijgen bij de midterms verkiezingen van 3/11/2026.
It is good that the Correspondent’s Dinner was not continued (NRC 26/4/26). Especially because it is not certain that the ‘lone wolf’ shooter acted alone (NRC 26/4/26). But also because a stand-up comedian criticizing the ruling power is missing.
In earlier times, the court jester was the only one who could tell a head of state, such as Louis XIV, the Sun King, the unvarnished truth without literally losing his head. By doing so, the head of state showed his people that he is quite willing to listen to criticism and that he is willing to be vulnerable. Incidentally, the American population demonstrates a sense of history with ‘No Kings’. This court jester—the feared, critical stand-up comedian—has been silenced at the Correspondent’s Dinner, causing an important pillar of American democracy, ‘freedom of speech’, to be missing.
The missed opportunity to polish the image of him as a non-democratic president is being offered to the president anew. If he does not seize the opportunity with both hands to restore the court jester to his former glory, he will be presented with the bill for this at the midterm elections on 3/11/2026.
