Tax refugees returning to the Netherlands: a good feeling?

Nederlanders, dat wel. Dus dan heb je consulaire bijstand, als het nodig is in je nieuwe woonplaats in Dubai. De Golfstaten verleiden goed gevulde buitenlandse portemonnees te komen naar deze staten (NRC 11/3/26). Naast toeristen, lijkt met name Dubai een fiscale woon- en werkparadijs te zijn voor rijke gepensioneerden. Maar ook voor succesvolle ondernemers en zgn. digitale nomaden. Ondernemers, die fiscaal plaatsonafhankelijk met alleen hun laptop kunnen werken.

Nu het paradijs even de hel op aarde lijkt te zijn, vluchten duizenden Nederlanders terug naar huis. De migranten, die het slavenwerk in de Golfstaten voor hun rekening nemen en die juist het slachtoffer van de bombardementen zijn, hebben die mogelijkheid waarschijnlijk niet. Als Nederlander kan je natuurlijk een beroep doen op consulaire bijstand daarbij. Het is niet gratis, maar dat kan het jarenlange belastingvrije inkomen wel lijden. Natuurlijk, de Nederlanders die zich daar echt gevestigd hebben, zullen hun huis en haard niet zomaar achterlaten. Maar voor de plaatsonafhankelijke belastingvluchtelingen komt het nu goed uit, dat er toch nog wel een Nederland is – verfoeid om alles wat in hun ogen slecht is en waar zij mogelijk al jaren niets aan de voorzieningen hebben bijgedragen – die hun de helpende hand biedt om terug te keren naar hun moederland. Hun goed recht, maar ergens voelt dit niet goed.

Dutch people, yes. So then you have consular assistance if needed in your new home in Dubai. The Gulf States tempt well-filled foreigners to come to these states (NRC 11/3/26). Besides tourists, Dubai in particular seems to be a fiscally advantageous living and working paradise for wealthy retirees. But also for successful entrepreneurs and so-called digital nomads. Entrepreneurs who can work independently of their location with just their laptop.

Now that paradise seems to be hell on earth for a while, thousands of Dutch people are fleeing home. The migrants who are doing the slave labor in the Gulf States and who are precisely the victims of the bombings, probably don’t have that option. As a Dutch citizen, you can, of course, request consular assistance in this regard. It’s not free, but that can certainly offset years of tax-free income. Of course, the Dutch who have truly settled there won’t simply leave their homes behind. But for these location-independent tax refugees, it’s fortunate that there’s still a Netherlands—loathed for everything they consider bad, and where they may not have contributed to any services for years—offering them a helping hand to return to their homeland. Their right, but somehow this doesn’t feel right.
