Were the gods really astronauts?
President Trump ontrafelt het grote mysterie van de X-files (NRC 11/5/26) door de geheimgehouden documenten over UAP – Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, voorheen UFO’s – successievelijk in de tijd vrij te geven.
Daarmee geeft hij aan dat zijn administratie transparant is, anders dan die van zijn voorgangers. Dat moet hem goodwill opleveren bij alle complotdenkers die tot dan de overheid voor geen cent vertrouwen. Het ligt overigens in lijn met het intensieve wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar buitenaards leven. Maar van die ondersteuning zal hij ver willen blijven, omdat bekend is dat hij geen voorstander is van wetenschap.
Veel van de verschijnselen is in de loop van de decennia verklaard, ondanks de geslotenheid van trouwens niet alleen de Amerikaanse overheid. De verschijnselen variëren van militaire projecten tot ordinaire oplichting. De bekendste ‘hoax’ is wel het Roswell incident,
Maar zitten de – internationale – complotdenkers wel te wachten op het vrijgeven? Van het complot blijft dan niets over, maar vooral omdat het bezoek van buitenaardse kosmonauten voor hun onomstotelijk vaststaat. Dat de documenten van de overheid op z’n minst geen bewijs daartoe leveren past daar niet in. Sterker, zij zijn ervan overtuigd, dat de overheid het bewijs, dat de goden kosmonauten waren à la Erich von Däniken, nooit zal willen vrijgeven vanwege de demystificatie van het geloof en de geopolitieke en maatschappelijke chaos, die dat teweeg zal brengen. Welk politiek doel president Trump ook heeft met het vrijgeven van de documenten: zo bezien zal hij in ieder geval de verstokte complotdenker nooit overtuigen.

In doing so, he indicates that his administration is transparent, unlike that of his predecessors. This is intended to earn him goodwill among all the conspiracy theorists who, until then, did not trust the government one bit. Incidentally, it is in line with the intensive scientific research into extraterrestrial life. However, he will want to stay far away from that support, as it is known that he is not a proponent of science.
Many of the phenomena have been explained over the decades, despite the secrecy of not only the American government, for that matter. The phenomena range from military projects to ordinary scams. The most famous ‘hoax’ is arguably the Roswell incident.
But are the – international – conspiracy theorists actually waiting for the release? Nothing will remain of the conspiracy then, but mainly because the visit of extraterrestrial cosmonauts is, for them, an irrefutable fact. The fact that the government documents provide at least no evidence to that effect does not fit in. In fact, they are convinced that the government will never want to release the evidence that the gods were cosmonauts à la Erich von Däniken, due to the demystification of the faith and the geopolitical and societal chaos that this would cause. Whatever political goal President Trump has in releasing the documents, viewed in this light, he will in any case never convince the die-hard conspiracy theorist.
