Iran-US conflict. An economic Armageddon
Erger dan een aristocratische leider met een doel is een MAGA leider zonder. Daarom moet president Trump de economische chaos hebben voorspeld, ontstaan door het sluiten van de straat van Hormuz, waardoor 20% van de fossiele wereldhandel tot stilstand is gekomen. Chaos, de ‘middle-name’ van Iran, die als autocratische staat dus ook volgens verwachting daadwerkelijk tot sluiting overgaat. Wat president Trump nu heeft bereikt is een Iran, die in het laatste vredevoorstel van 1/5/26 het recht op beheer van de Straat van Hormuz als een gegeven ziet (NRC nieuws 3/5/26). Diplomatie lijkt niet in zicht, als president Trump als reactie geeft, dat Iran nog een onvoldoende hoge prijs heeft betaald. Mochten de midterms verkiezingen in nov 2026 slecht voor hem uitvallen, dan zadelt hij zijn politieke opvolgers met het gegeven, dat Iran die troef nooit meer uit handen zal geven Ă©n over nucleaire faciliteiten blijft beschikken.
Het lijkt er op, dat president Trump een diep geloof heeft in het beĂ«indigen van een conflict alsof je een computergame speelt. Veel raketten gebruiken totdat je daarmee een ‘next level’ bereikt. Is dat een betere wereld om in te leven bijv. door een extra impuls in de transitie naar duurzame energie? Dat zal de president worst wezen. Wat dan wel? Voor hem lijkt de oorlog al te zijn beĂ«indigd en lijkt er dus geen ander doel te zijn. Blijkt de ‘next level’ dan toch echt een geo-economische Armageddon te zijn? Is dat dan het echte MAGA plan?
Worse than an aristocratic leader with a goal is a MAGA leader without one. That is why President Trump must have predicted the economic chaos caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which brought 20% of global fossil fuel trade to a standstill. Chaos, the ‘middle name’ of Iran, which, as an autocratic state, is indeed proceeding with the closure as expected. What President Trump has now achieved is an Iran that views the right to control the Strait of Hormuz as a given in the latest peace proposal of May 1, 2026 (NRC News May 3, 2026). Diplomacy does not seem to be in sight, given that President Trump responds by stating that Iran has not yet paid a sufficiently high price. Should the midterm elections in November 2026 turn out badly for him, he will saddle his political successors with the fact that Iran will never relinquish that trump card and will continue to possess nuclear facilities.
It seems that President Trump has a deep belief in ending a conflict as if playing a computer game. Using many missiles until you reach a ‘next level’. Is that a better world to live in, for example, through an extra boost in the transition to sustainable energy? The President couldn’t care less. What then? To him, the war seems to have already ended, and so there appears to be no other goal. Does the ‘next level’ turn out to be a geo-economic Armageddon after all? Is that the real MAGA plan?
