The commemoration of May 9, 1945, is now fuel for the Russia/Ukraine war.
Het is niet ondenkbaar, dat president Poetin echt verbolgen is, als Oekraïne op de dag van de herdenking van het einde van de Grote Oorlog op 9 mei de ceremonie met geweld zal verstoren (NRC 8/5/26). Immers, miljoenen van zijn landgenoten hebben hun leven gelaten voor het verslaan van Nazi Duitsland. Het besmeuren van zo’n nationale dag zou geen enkele staat in voorkomend geval accepteren en zou zeker tot uitzinnige woede leiden. De herdenking raakt alle Russen, inclusief de 8 mln gevallen Oekraïners. Oekraïne heeft de herdenkingsdatum van zijn eigen doden verplaatst naar 8 mei 2026. Dit soort gelegenheden geeft de wereld in de regel de gelegenheid de waarde van vrede uit te spreken. Voor beide presidenten heeft de herdenking grote symbolische waarde voor de achterban. Maar centraal staat de overwinning en niet de vrede.
Voor president Poetin is het een bevestiging, dat de strijd tegen de fascisten in Oekraïne een rechtvaardige strijd is en zal worden gewonnen. Voor president Zelenski moet de herdenking het Oekraïense volk laten zien, dat een binnenvallende mogendheid kan worden verslagen. Deze herdenking is mogelijk nieuwe brandstof om de strijd voort te zetten.
It is not inconceivable that President Putin would be genuinely outraged if Ukraine were to violently disrupt the ceremony on May 9, the day of the commemoration of the end of the Great War (NRC 8/5/26). After all, millions of his compatriots gave their lives to defeat Nazi Germany. No state would accept the defilement of such a national day in this instance, and it would certainly lead to frenzied rage. The commemoration affects all Russians, including the 8 million fallen Ukrainians. Ukraine has moved the date of the commemoration of its own dead to May 8, 2026. As a rule, occasions like this give the world the opportunity to express the value of peace. For both presidents, the commemoration holds great symbolic value for their constituencies. But the focus is on victory, not peace.
For President Putin, it is a confirmation that the fight against the fascists in Ukraine is a just struggle and will be won. For President Zelensky, the commemoration must show the Ukrainian people that an invading power can be defeated. This commemoration may be new fuel to continue the fight.
